Baby Teeth Not Falling Out I have a 6 month old Yorkie (vet thinks he might be younger) and he has lost some baby teeth but is not losing all. His front teeth fell out and most of his grown up teeth are growing in next to the baby teeth, however two of the back molar baby teeth are only attache on the inner side of his gums. I just noticed this recently because his breath is awful and he has a harder time eating the his food (still eating just takes longer to chew). In most cases the baby teeth can be removed surgically, however he has a severe heart condition and can not go under anesthisa to have baby teeth removed. So, my question is has anyone else had to deal with this?? I have been brushing his teeth and the back baby molars are loose but I am not sure what to do. His regular vet is not in until Monday and I am going to bring him in for a visit, but would like to know what others have done to help in this situation. Previous visits the vet has told me that he can have two sets of teeth and it won't bother him. But with the back baby teeth only half inbedded and the grown up teeth growing in I am worried. Is there anything I can do to sooth the issue? He is only a 2.5 lb puppy how can I tell if the back molars are done growing?? Any advise will help

Oh my goodness....a tiny little fella! Retained baby teeth are common in Yorkies and more often than not, when the pup is spayed or neutered, you can expect to have retained baby teeth to be removed. I dont feel comfortable subjecting any of my babies to surgery until they weigh at least 3 lbs!!! The permanent teeth will come in along side the baby teeth, and either push them out or those are the ones you will have to have pulled. As his permanent molars come in, they will push those loose molars out....they swallow teeth all the time...not what we really like to happen, but not unusual.

Thanks I really hope they fall out soon, it doesn't look like the adult molars are completely grown in. With his heart condition he cannot have surgery, the vet does not think he will wake back up if we put him under.

| Playing tug of war will help pull out baby teeth. That's happened once when Turbo was a pup, the baby tooth just popped right out! You can also get a baby wash cloth & just pull it right out. Don't wiggle, as that can hurt them, but if it's a tooth on top, just pull it straight down. A tooth on the bottom, just pull it upward. It obviously has to be a loose tooth for it to come out easily. I did that w/Mimi, she had a loose baby tooth in the back molar, no blood or anything. Saved $12, I think that's how much my vet charged per tooth extraction!

If you cant get your fingers into that tiny little mouth, that tug of war idea works great! He is so tiny, I guess you can pull and tug hard enough to pull the loose tooth out.? Also, knawing on a bully stick or a raw beef rib bone, will loosen those teeth...just be with him and watch him chew that bone....he is soooooo tiny, maybe he wont be able to actually chew the bone up....but just watch him closely when he has it.
