| Thought it was fleas...now pustules and brown spots? Yorkie - 3.5 years old, 8lbs, up to date on all shots, on monthly flea medication. Appetite and energy is normal, if not a bit lethargic cuz I have her cooped up to monitor it but she jumps at the chance to play immediately and with the same vigor and stamina. Last weekend I noticed a single flea on her. We gave her a medicated flea bath and started cleaning house. This weekend I spotted another single flea. Another flea bath. Meanwhile mid week she started to develop what I assumed was flea dirt - excessively on her belly and in her arm pits (not in her hair, does not flake off onto a paper towel or a sheet, cannot comb it out, etc). She also started to develop solid, slightly crusted/scabbed, dark brown spots with lots of mini spots around them. Yesterday I noticed pustules forming on her lower abdomen, today two on her vulva. More of these brown crusted spots have developed around her groin. She is licking her groin (thus the wet hair and spots you can see in the pictures below), she scratches her arm pits, and she nibbles on her hips. It does not bother her to touch these spots, or any other place on her skin. I tried to wash off the "flea dirt" but it took a good rub and it flaked off like scabs, and did not turn reddish like normal flea dirt either. I am still assuming I have a flea problem and have already been in the process of cleaning down the house daily. However I am unsure of the brown spots and pustules as I've never seen them before. I'd like an idea before I head into the vet as my dog currently sees one that likes to do all sorts of tests and I'd like to limit them to relevancy for the sake of my pocket book. (Roommates dog apparently has an ear infection but I do not know the details. Says he is cleaning the dogs ears nightly with medication.) Some picture links if it helps: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d5...s/IMAG2549.jpg Above: Shows the armpit "dirt" and the most formulated crusted spot with little spots around it. Not raised, not painful or itchy to her. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d5...eiahealth1.jpg Above: Blue - Similar brown spots and dots, Red - Pustules forming, Green - "flea dirt?" http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d5...s/IMAG2552.jpg Above: Pustule and spots around groin. Several sites said not to try the dog hair down if there's a dermatological problem until identified so I've let it go this week but she keeps licking it. Thanks for any input ahead of time. |

| I agree those flea shampoos can cause reactions sometimes dangerous ones

| Poor baby! Bumping this up for you in hopes that some more experienced YTers can help! But I agree with the above posters could it be the shampoo? If she was bathed in it twice within days it could be she is having a reaction to it?

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Two of mine have this. I went to the vet for other issues and forgot to ask about this. We're due back in in two weeks so I'll see then. I do know this is not flea related. Under magnification, the dark dots are like long blackheads (looks more like a splinter), like a greasy substance in the skin pores. The larger, lighter brown spots I think are a bacterial skin infection. I think both things are coming from some kind of mite, not sarcoptic or demodectic mange, but something different. I applied Coconut oil to their tummies and the next day 95% of it cleared up. I'll be watching to see what your vet finds. I've looked all over the internet and can't find anything that exactly matches this.

| Moo gets the same thing on her belly but this time she broke out all over. She has been on 3 month long rounds of prednisone, I have tried zyrtec which did nothing and she takes benadryl daily now which only helps until it wears off. She has been allergy tested, for what ever that is worth, she is on a grain free, potato free, rosemary free organic raw diet...no treats other than veggies once in a while...no meds or chemicals go in or on her, we don't spray the yard, I don't use chemicals in the house or on the floors, no fabric softener on her blankets or bed, she doesn't go out to other places to run around and she has no fleas or ticks...we've checked. She has good bloodwork, thyroid is normal and so is her white blood count, kidneys, liver etc...she'll be fine one day and the next she'll be broke out all over her belly again even though nothing has changed. I just bought a bottle of Zymox medicated shampoo but I'm not sure that has helped too much. After reading about chiggars this morning we gave her a bath in Dawn. I've been told to give her probiotics to help build her immune system. My next move is to have a skin scraping done to see if she has some kind of mite or something going on that we can't see. But if it was mites wouldn't the breakouts be constant? She will break out and it clears up for a while then she breaks out again. I know this is bad on her but it's awful frustrating for me too... I want to help her but it seems no matter what I do it's only temporary. |

| My Chipper used to get spots like that from staph. He would be put on predisone with good results. I guess once you get staph it can stay in your system your entire life. As Chipper aged and whenever his immune system was compromised, his staff would come back.

| Myh late Lizzie used to get something just like this from laying in the grass. It would turn into a Staph Infection. The Vet always had me keep the antibiotic Simplicef on hand. This drug was wonderful for her. Your baby does need to see a Vet so they can look at it.

I wonder if that's what makes Moo break out? She does like to lay in the grass when she goes out... Is Simplicef an oral antibiotic or a cream? | |

| Us too! My Buddy has the same problem. In fact, he's going back to the vet tomorrow. I've been thinking it was mange, which the whole litter had when at the rescuer. At the time I brought him home, I was told to bathe him in Goodwinol shampoo. I did, and it went away. Haven't had a problem for years. . . . until a few months ago. Took him to the vet, did the antibiotics, etc. and the little blisters and brow flaky scabs went away. They started back a few weeks ago and I began shampooing with Goodinwol (sp?) shampoo again and he started clearing up. Then BAM! it's back with a vengance. I saw the first little blister yesterday and call the vet for an appt. Will see what vet has to say tomorrow. Please post your results so we can compare notes. |
