| Ulcerative colitis I have a fourteen year old Yorkshire terrier who has been suffering from ulcerative colitis for about two years now. He has been to the vet and had a stomach scan which showed nothing. He suffers from bleeding when going to the toilet and this is sometimes worse than other times. He aggravates the condition by eating tissues that he finds on the road so I have to put a muzzle on him but not all the time as then when off the lead he cannot protect himself. I would be interested to know if anyone else has had a Yorkshire Terrier with this condition and whether I could give him a different diet that might help. I have tried out several of the dry hypoallergenic foods that one can buy in the UK. He now has a Burns food that is hypoallergenic but gets tired of it (having this food alone does not cure the condition) so I add some good quality dog meat which contains no additives. The condition is apparently aggravated by stress so he gets plenty of exercise. I have also added a daily spoonful of good quality plain yogurt to his food this does improve his condition. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. |

| If yogurt helps, probiotics for dogs make help more as they are stronger. Also I've had great success using coconut oil in the diet, for tummy and urinary issues. It has natural antibiotic properties and can coat and soothe the intestines. Has a urnalysis to rule out stones been done?

| I don't have experience with yorkies with ulcerative colitis, but my son has UC. Yes, diet can help. Even though your yorkie has UC, not celiacs disease, I would switch his food to a grain free and gluten free food. Many of the quality brand dog foods have grain free and I know I saw one just the other day that was also gluten free. I can't remember if it was Wellness Core or Blue Buffalo or some other. The grain free foods are usually higher in proteins, also. But it is worth a try because it might give him some relief. Last edited by bobohyde; 09-21-2012 at 06:52 AM. |

| Someone here on YT recommended this: Multi Strained Probiotics | Cure for Ulcerative Colitis You can get the powder form & give 1/16th of a teaspoon. It needs to be refrigerated...hope you'll be able to find some in the UK. I ordered it from amazon, it's expensive ($86+ for 30 sachets). Any good probiotic will do, yogurt alone will not help, he'll need to consume alot of it to do anything. He needs to be on a high fiber low fat diet. Add pumpkin, green beans, etc & avoid red meat!
