| New puppy, what to feed? Hi guys! I'm new here! We are getting our new Shorkie (shih tzu /yorkie mix) next weekend and I'm still going back and forth on what food to feed her. She will be smaller (looking more yorkie sized, probably 5lbs max) and right now is being fed Iams Toy breed puppy. I realize if I switch I will have to mix and do it slowly.. So what do you guys recommend? I'm tempted to stick with Iams b/c our Lab eats Iams special diet (she has a lot of allergies). but I've also seen some good things about Royal Canine for Yorkie pups. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! Kelly |

We've been rotating Toki through the grain-free Fromm for the past several months...the kibbles are nice and small! Toki came to us from the breeder on Earthborn (another good choice) and we transitioned her to Blue Buffalo which she also did well on. There are lots of options! | |

| Which ever food you chose I would make sure to look up the company and how they handle things. I would stay very very far away from Purina sense they are the makers of the Waggin Train chicken jerky that is killing and make many dogs sick yet they wont pull it.

| food confused... We are newbie yorkie parents-We picked up our little girl pup 2 weeks ago from the breeder, she is 4 months old. The breeder recommends and had her on a vegetarian food for it's low protein. Our vet is concerned about this as he feels she might be missing out on good nutrients as a growing puppy. She is also having constant loose stools on this veg. food which he feels could be diet related. Had anyone's dogs had issue on a veg diet? What are your thoughts on low protein for a healthy pup, with no signs of liver shunt, and excellent results on bile acid test? Is it 'normal' to have yorkies on a low protein food as a preventative measure, as it appears in my case? It just seems really odd to me... Thanks! |

| I would feed a dog vegan diet only for medical reasons. Mine get fruits and veggies daily but as treats. I would never feed a growing pup a vegetarian diet myself. Mine eat FROMM's Chicken a la Veg with Honest Kitchen as a topper. They will eat the kibble plain, too- I spoil them I was burned by Nestle Purina and would never buy one of their products again human or pet. Feed what works for you and your pet.

| We are back to looking at food as the issue for her loose/mucousy stools. We had a stool sample done, just to rule that out, that was fine. Also had her on medication for a week, just to calm her system down, and that totally helped-stools were normal. But as soon as she was off it, back to loose and mucousy, at all hours of the night. My breeder has recommend food of no more than 23% protein and 16% fat, and also to avoid chicken as it's known to be a problem for yorkies. If you know of any food that fits those guidelines, please let me know. I spend more time researching dog food than my own! lol Thanks for the help! |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Dogs are not vegetarians. And they should have protein in their diet. There are some great food recommendations above. Check out Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor it is a great site for dog food and reviews. |

| I have to question your breeder's judgement and opinions. Dogs are carnivores and SHOULD eat meat. I wouldn't go too high on protein, but 30% or so should be fine, unless your dog has a medical reason to be on a low protein diet. I would ABSOLUTELY switch foods. Go to a good small pet food store in your area and see what they carry. Fromm is great food from a great company. Horizon is another great company that makes great foods. There are others also. I would stay away from foods made by Diamond. They use low quality ingredients and have poor quality control, basically only motivated by sales and profit. You should be able to get some samples from your local independently owned pet food store. If you don't have anything available locally, you can order online from places like Chewy.com, Petfood.com, PetcareRX.com, and there are several other good online stores. If you prefer to shop at Petco, they carry Blue Buffalo, Wellness, and Nature's Variety. There are so many choices out there that it will make your head spin. LOL

| Oh, I see you're in Canada. Sorry, I just noticed that. Horizon is a small Canadian company and all their foods are made in their own facility with locally sourced ingredients. Acana and Orijen are from Champion pet foods, which is also a Canadian company that sources ingredients locally (as much as possible). I am not sure what other foods are available in your area. I'd consider looking into foods by Horizon if I were you.
