More boosters?? Took Oliver to the Vet today for what i was told was his last in the series of shots. I asked again about neutering and asked if he had any teeth that needed to be pulled. She said only if there were doubles. She said his teeth looked good, canine babies still in, she wants to wait til they're out before she gives the all clear to go out and about with him. One more series of boosters before we can hit the dog park. I asked if in a month his teeth are still not out then what..are we doing more boosters? What if we had them pulled and neutered would we still need to do another set of shots. She assured me in the next few weeks they'd be ready to be out...She also said Parvo is running rambant in Tucson and with the monsoon rains its spreading things around, better safe than sorry. Has this happened to anyone else? She already discounted a series of shots the breeder gave him so we did an extra one...now another?? |
I'm a little confused...does he need his last serious of vaccines? Why is she waiting until he may need teeth pulled. (not sure if I'm reading this right...sorry!) |

I asked well what if he was neutered next week and they were pulled would he need to come back in a month. What if they're not out in a month do we get that shot and wait another month and do another shot. Gal at desk said no, by 6mo his baby teeth should be out or ready. She told me Tucson was heavy with parvo they're seeing it more this time of year. Said with his baby teeth in so strong and him looking young?! He is 5lbs 5 oz at 5 months. Maybe I'm just frustrated. |

Yeah I don't get it either. He's had his rabies, he got one shot from breeder that I witnessed, she even put lables on his shot record. He's had 3 from Vet. I was told this was his last one. Now they want to see him in a month for another. |

Yes, I've only lived in Tucson a year, took Roxy in for shots because it was close to house and then when she passed because they were open. 24 hour Animal Hospital. I just don't understand why he needs so many. Are they discrediting all the shots from the breeder? I witnessed one. I'm going to call around other places. They also wanted 380 for neutering, thats with no blood work, no teeth done....folks at work said that was steep. When I asked if they wanted to check blood for liver shunt, they said that'd be another 120. |
I'm really confused too. Typical schedule is getting shots around (approx) 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks old. Of course it varies a bit depending on when exactly you got your dog, what the breeder may have already given, etc. But either way -- sounds like way too much. Take a look at Dr. Dodd's vaccine protocol, or the AAHA protocol. |
Just reading an local article, parvo in Tucson, is says 3 shots. He's had 4 and they want one more. "According to Valley Animal Hospital, vaccines are usually given to puppies when they are 8, 12, and 16 weeks old with a recommended booster shot annually after the initial three." He had one at the breeder at 8 weeks, Vet has done 3 one at 16, 20 and now 25 weeks. and saying he needs another.... Why does his weight and teeth play into this and are there adverse effects from too many vaccinations? |

I agree with Brister. I do NOT vaccinate my dogs every year. I used to have titers done, which arent cheap!. One of my dogs levels for distemper was so high she didn't need another shot for 3 yrs!! So I made a decision, along with my vet, that the furkids would only get booster every 3 =4 yrs. We aren't vaccinated every year...why should our dogs be! Unfortunately Rabies vacs are mandated by the state or I would push those out too! As for the neutering. I just had Bentley done about 4 weeks ago. the total cost(no blood work done, had that done previously for another issue) and having 1 baby tooth pulled was 373.00...And my vet is on the expensive side. Sounds to me like your vet is looking to make some money off you...I know you said you haven't lived there long but do you know someone with pets that you could ask where they bring theirs? If not...I would call around and ditch the vet you have now. MO |
All baby teeth being out has nothing to dowith vaccines. Some retain teeth or a year and I'd hope they wouldn't plan on doing it monthly that whole time. While there are different opinions, it is acceptable to discredit breeder given vaccies. Older than sixteen weeks and usually just two sets are given. Starting younger and it really does have to do with spacing. |
I believe the teeth pulling and Neutering is what was meant to be together. just a mis understanding?? When the puppy put asleep they can do both. They usually put them under for teeth pulling. Pretty common to do this together. That what I get from it??? |
"She already discounted a series of shots the breeder gave him so we did an extra one...now another??" Also if the breeder give the shot and has a sticker that comes with it to put on his chart or records...it's legit. Shots aren't required. Only the mandated ones like Rabies. They are to protect your pets. Thats why you don't take your puppy place because some ppl dont at all...have them vaccinated. |
Use apple cider vinegar as a rub and to wash your dog...no need yo worry about a parvo shot. |
