| Need to trim down 2 little yorkies I have 2 beautiful little yorkie girls. They were both about 3 pounds when they were about 17 weeks old. They are around 3 years old now and weigh 5 lbs and 7 lbs. They have become very rounded and need to lose some weight. The vet said they would be much happier if they were a little thinner. I feed them Royal Canin Yorkie food. I have watched how much they eat and it is about 1/4 to 1/3 cup a day. What do I need to do to get these girls to lighten up some? I want them to be around for a long time. Thanks for any advice. |

| Feed a little less and have them move a little more. Watch the treats can be high calorie for small amount. Mine get fruit; veggies; or real meat/chicken/fish as treats.

| I agree with the others: feed them a little less, lighten up on treats, and be sure they are getting the right balance of calories and protein. If Royal Canin makes a diet formula, try it. I have Graysee on the "safe weight" food by Blue Buffalo, as she tips the scales at over 11 pounds right now. Don't get alarmed, she is a VERY large Yorkie, and not really fat, just a little overweight. Her ideal weight would be 9-10 pounds. Honestly, even though I have paperwork that shows that her mom and pop were purebred Yorkies, I still have a tendency to doubt it, and feel that there may be some Silky Terrier in her ancestry somewhere, as she looks more Silky than Yorkie, at times. |

| With them being 3lbs at 17 weeks old... it doesn't seem like 5lbs and 7lbs as adults is that far of a stretch? But if the vet says they are overweight... it's hard to say without pictures. You should be able to feel the ribs easily without pushing hard and see a waistline. Also, 1/4 cup per day sounds about right for their size. But you say you "watch" how much they eat. Are they free-fed? I would just up their exercise and do scheduled feedings so you know exactly what they should be at.

My furkids Donating Member | 5 to 7 lbs doesn't sound over weight to me either...yorkies come in all sizes. I have 3 that range from 4lbs to 6 1/2 lbs, there are some on here that are 20lbs!! (they belong to the teapot club! ) But, as someone here said...if you vet thinks they are overweight maybe they could suggest a good "lighter" food for them....do you bring them for walks? are they couch potatoes? Maybe more exercise would help.
