| I guess I won't be in a rush to get anything done, then. Thank you for the advice. My vet had discussed early neutering and why he doesn't do it (I had asked why the animal shelter in our area neuters or spays the animals when they are 6-8 weeks old) and he told me that they have no choice. Typically the people who adopt the pets tend not to get them neutered/spayed and create an ongoing problem with too many homeless animals. He told me that it causes the animal to deteriorate much younger, having something to do with their skeletal system. I am sorry that I cannot remember exactly what, because I determined not to do that to any of my animals. |

| Actually there are health benefits to neutering a male. They are much more suseptibe to testicular cancer. urinary tract problems, prostate gland issues and hard to figure out why, but rectal cancer. I had a grooming client intact shih Tzu male years ago ended up with rectal cancer. Owner never had him neutered as he was never a problem unneutered. When he came up with rectal cancer, her vet then told her it is more prevalent for intact males to end up with rectal cancer. As for early neutering to prevent marking territory it should not be a problem if you don't have intact females around coming into heat. Scraping feet after pottying or whatever reason is a dog behaviour in both males and females, altered or not. Some dogs do that some don't, i have seen it in either sex altered or not. I recommend to anyone buying a puppy from me that is less than 6 months old to wait until 7-8 months and get any retained baby teeth removed at the same time as the spay/neuter. |

EXCELLENT VET!!! Supported by evidenced based research and outcomes....you have a VERY up to date vet....hold onto him!!! Do your OWN research...look for trials, controlled trials, and double blind studies conducted by vet colleges and recorded in Journals of Vet Medicine....there are several well documented studies conducted over 10+ years that support what your vet has shared with you....I like to suscribe to a couple of vet journals.....kinda keeps you current on what is going on in vet medicine and current theories of practice! | |

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I so agree with YorkieMom's advice. Times are changing; research and not just in North America, but in the world is being done. It behooves all dog fanciers, be they pet owners, or exhibitors/breeders, or rescue folks to keep current. Twenty years ago, we had no such thing as FHO surgery, Liver shunt testing and surgery, and a multitude of other health tests and treatments. Science advanced our care our ability to treat disease in our dogs. It is time indeed past time, just like with vaccination protocols, that the knee jerk automatic recommendation to spay/neuter at 6-8 mths old is relooked. In my mind paramount always is what protects, promotes the overall health of the dog.

No problem with registering him, after all he is a purebred. You just won't breed him of course. And yes it can be hereditary.

| No disrespect, but I have not seen any real research that proves that spay/neuters at 6 - 9 months of age is hazardous to the health of the pups. If someone can show that to me I would love to read it.

Try reloading: www.*caninesports.*com/*SpayNeuter.*html Additional suggestions: Access a cached copy of www.*caninesports.*com/*SpayNeuter.*html Search on Google: That is what I got earlier. If that is the site I have seen in the past, I did not see any real research that would outweigh the benefits...but Hey...maybe it is a different one.

| Ok...I just saw the cached copy of the site. I don't see any research. I see that the author says it is One Veterinarian's Opinion and I see articles that he used as references. I am asking for real research. To date I have never seen any.

| Quote: I am still on the fence about all of this. I just have not seen the real data that tells me that their growth concerns outweigh the benefits of spay/neuter for dogs. To each his own...each person must make up their minds about what they feel is best for their pups.

| Perhaps I misread. I will look again at another time. I am exhausted and going to bed.
