| Canned food and Home cooked? Hiya all I am getting a Yorkshire terrier puppy soon. I want the very best for him. I would love to feed home cooked but worried that I will not provide the proper nutrition he needs. Would it be a good idea to feed Ceaser puppy trays for one meal and home cooked for the others? Any good info on home cooking diet? |

| If you wan't to home cook you need to talk to a vet nutritionist who will give you the recipes and tell you what kind of supplement to use. Also I would not feed ceaser's I am not a fan.

I home-cook for our Harry once a day, and have done since he was about 4 months old. He has either chicken or ground steak etc, with either rice or sweet potato, and plenty of veggies and fruits. He has a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement too. He absolutely loves his food, and hasn't been picky since starting him on this. I also leave kibble down for him to keep him going - I personally use Royal Canin (now) Yorkshire Terrier appropriate. This isn't only to 'top him up' - but because the hard food keeps his teeth beautiful!! If I were you, I wouldn't feed your new baby Caesar - it isn't all that wonderful! Wet-food wise I would feed something like Lily's Kitchen if you can - it's organic and very pure, there are some extremely good one's out there....Good luck! Sally + Harry x | |

| IMO Caesar's trays are garbage. There are many other quality wet foods including some made with human grade ingredients. To home cook you should see a vet. nutritionist and have a plan made to make sure it is properly balanced. You don't want to kill your baby with kindness.

| I home cook both meals for my girls. And I leave dry kibble down for the youngest one. She is very energetic and just seems to need an occasional snack. I am a huge fan of home cooking. However, you do need to get your recipe from a vet nutritionist and also do a supplement. I like petdiets.com for recipes and BalanceIt for my supplement.

| A little off topic but just thought i'd mention that kibble doesn't clean teeth. It's often compared to trying to clean our teeth with a pretzel. A dental hygiene routine is very important |

| Of course, but an 'all-wet' feeding regime does nothing for their teeth at all |

| All I do know is - I've stuck to what I do now - home-cook one meal a day, and leave kibble down for top-ups and grazing, for over 40 years....and I've never had to have dental work done by a vet, for any of my dogs.... |

| That's great, you do what works for you and i wasn't judging what you feed or how you feed. I posted that for anyone else who may be misinformed on the whole "kibble cleaning teeth" myth. For most people though, relying solely on kibble to clean their dogs teeth never works out. |
