Bad Foods For Yorkie????? I am getting my 9 week old yorkie in 7 days!! The breeder where Marley is coming from said he loves cottage cheese! I was thinking "you are giving him cottage cheese!!" Then I found out it was good for him, and plain yogurt! I never knew this. This is all new for me......and I would never want to hurt my baby. So...Question.....Other than chocolate, onions, raisins, and grapes.....is there anything else I should definitely keep my yorkie away from food wise? I've read where people feed their dog rice, chicken, all kinds of fruits and veggies. |
well you have the right toxic ones listed not to give!! =*(()) my cedric loves green peppers, and carrots. i try things only one at time to be sure he has no digestive/potty issues when i introduce them to something new. garlic and things as such i believe ive read are ok in very small doses occasionally for instance if you were making your own meals for them. good luck with your new bundle of love. |
Georgie loves cottage cheese, carrots, chicken, rice, yogurt (he gets that with every meal) and a few other things. The foods you listed are the ones to stay away from. |

Is he 9 weeks now or going to be 9 weeks in another week? That is awfully young for a puppy to be taken away from his mother. |

I mix a tablesppon of fat free cottage cheese in with their kibble every day. Followed by green beans & apple. They love it. Of course I only give small portions of each to go with their kibble. They know they have to fininsh the kibble before they get the rest. I also give them carrots, cauliflower & fat free yogurt.The only other people food they get is when I have cod. Then they get a very small piece each and are always looking for more. LOL |
MML, All of the suggestions and recommendations you see here, are right in line with what I know is good, but... I know it may be hard, but like LadyJane, you should try to let that pup stay with it's Mom and Pack another few weeks. It REALLY makes a difference on it's ability so socialize, and has a impact in it's health as an adult. Think about it...;) |
When/if you give him meat, you should be careful of meat scraps with a lot of seasonings on it. Meat is great for dogs but the seasonings WE use may not be good for them. Oh, and be careful of anything with zylotol (sp?) in it. |
9 weeks? 9 weeks is really young. I would also encourage the breeder to keep the puppy until about 12 weeks of age. The breeder should be making sure that the pup is fully weaned from mom & able to thrive on their own with puppy dog food & some potty training should be introduced. |
Thanks everyone....he will be 9 weeks on 5-26, and unfortunately he has already been taken away from mommy a few days ago. Him and his sister are together, he is on soft food, and is very social and playful with his sister, and the staff member whom takes care of him until I get him. I talk to her daily, she also sends me pictures. I'm sure it would be even better if he stayed with mommy until 12 weeks, if all puppies did, that would be great, but it's just not always the case. They wanted him as independent as possible before he can come home. And with mommy there he wasnt eating wet food at all. But I appreciate your concern. The staff member that takes care of him said lately he's been trying to lick her toes, lol. I can't wait to meet him:) |

As far as bad food, there may certain foods your yorkie MAY be allergic to. In most cases, you will find out when your yorkie has a reaction (itchy skin, perhaps excessive eye discharge, etc). Just be mindful of anything new you give your yorkie to eat, and OBSERVE. It's helpful to introduce only ONE new item at a time, so you would know exactly what your yorkie may be allergic to, if there is a reaction. Oh. This also applies to any product you apply to your yorkie (shampoo, conditioner, detangling spray, etc.) |
When I first joined Yorkie Talk I thought you all were going overboard with waiting until the pup was 12 weeks. Boy was I wrong!!! My longtime, well respected breeder insisted that I take my baby at 9 weeks. Big mistake. She is so aggressive to other dogs (big and small). I tried to socialize her as soon as she had the appropriate shots. We also attended training twice. My little girl is 4 years old and she is still very aggressive towards all animals. She does very well with humans. Oh, how I wish I had known about this group beforehand. |
I only let my pups have single ingredient foods, no processed meats. Also have to constantly remind DH how little they are, a bit of rice is like a whole serving to him. |
