I would recommend keeping him on puppy food only until he's a bit older and his digestive system is more developed (better able to handle other foods and treats). Oh and good luck with your new puppy! |
Congrats on your new puppy- I am sure you are so excited!! I would recommend keeping him on puppy food only until he's a bit older and his digestive system is more developed (better able to handle other foods and treats). Oh and good luck with your new puppy! I agree with Kathy- I wouldn't be giving him human food for a while. Do as much research and ask as many questions as you can, Yorkie puppies can be tricky to take care of! Good luck, Hopefully you can share some pics!! |

Don't feel bad MarleyMyLove! I got chewed out on this forum for the same thing the other week! My cousin got her Yorkie at 8 weeks and she is PERFECT. Potty trained quickly, sweet as pie, isn't yappy, is friendly with all kids and adults. I love her! I am getting mine Friday (@ 8 weeks) and I can't wait either! I have another friend that got her Shih Tzu at 7 weeks and she was the runt.. Only 5 LBS now.. She is 8 years old now and they've never had any issues! I hope this makes you feel better! Have fun :) I feel your excitement! Haha :) |

*Will not sell a Yorkie puppy prior to 12 weeks of age, because of problems that may occur with a younger puppy. Right from the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America's web site. They have this exception for a reason people. Not to get everyone upset, but to perhaps educate potential buyers of the risks of getting a pup to young. When you have been on YT for a long time like some of us...you read these horrible stories of pups dying because they are taken away to young. You can't help to remind new members that there are indeed risks so that the same thing won't happen to them or to someone else. |

I understand why you think people are being overbearing but everyone gas yours and your puppy's best interest at heart. I got my baby last Tuesday, 10 weeks old. Wednesday he had a seizure due to hypoglycemia. I have and will continue to tell people that if it weren't for this site my little Jasper probably wouldn't be here today. Jasper is being syringe fed "puppy chow"; boiled chicken, egg yolk, cottage cheese, karo syrup, and rice. This wad every two hours because he wouldn't eat on his own after the.seizure, until yesterday. I have been given advice on how to hold him to feed him, how to Wein him off the syringe, anything ive asked. I hope you don't need the.help we did but just in case you do you'd find any answer you need right here and quickly. |
We got our first yorkie from a pet store over 8 1/2 years ago (didn't know about pet store puppies and puppy mills back then). She was only 6 or 7 weeks old. The guy at the pet store really drove home the point about hypoglycemia and making sure the puppy ate and drank a lot. He stressed how dangerous hypoglycemia is for small breed puppies and what to look for and what to do about it. Ginger has been fine and has never had a problem. This information stayed with me and helped me when we added Maggie and Lilly to our family. I know all puppies are different and have different personalities, but there are certain things you must be careful of. It is important to make sure the puppy eats well and gets plenty of water in order to say healthy. Puppies are fun, but also have their challenges (as all of us veteran small dog owners know). Good luck! |
