Actually, that's not true. Both are carnivores. The difference is cats are an obligate or true carnivore. Look at the shape of a dogs' teeth. Compare to your own. Humans are omnivores. We have more sharper teeth in front for tearing meat apart and flat grinding teeth for cushing plant matter. All dogs' teeth are pointed for tearing and eating meat

I use to have a good article to link to that explained it better and the differences between the types of carnivores - I'll see if I can still find it.

Here's some articles to better explain it.

Are Dogs Carnivores... or Omnivores?
Carnivore vs. Omnivore
http://www.thewholedog.org/NHMVTheOm...ivoreQuest.pdf

I'll keep trying to find my article that really discusses the types of carnivores, but it's touched on in these.

And do you really want to know where vets get their nutrition training and how much they get? It's basically all paid for by companies like Hills, Purina, and P&G, and maybe 10 hrs spent on nutrition if you're lucky in the 8 years of vet school. Of course they'll tell you Hills, Iams Veterinary Diets, Royal Canin Vet Diets, etc are the best - They make a HUGE profit off those foods (and yes, this is coming from someone that WORKS in vet clinics!). But I believe a truly responsible pet owner will do their own research. Dogs are carnivores. They need meat. Some carb is ok and even needed in some dogs, wolves will graze on grasses or vegetation if they feel the need, and corn can be OK for some dogs because it does provide roughage. That said, I don't think corn should be high on the ingredient list at all. It is not a very digestible food source for dogs - And usually used as a cheap filler to raise the protein level with minimal expense.

But as someone said, it's not all about ingredients. Quality of ingredients, processing, equipment cleanliness, storage, etc is equally as important. That's why I don't trust companies like Diamond and P&G. I cried when they bought out several good companies like California Natural and Innova - Even if the formulas had stayed the same, the quality was surely going to suffer. I'm actually a firm believer a well balanced raw diet is by far the most natural and healthiest way to feed any dog, but I also understand why that's just not an option - I know I can't even do that with my own pack, I try to do one raw meal a day, and the other meal kibble, but lets face it - I don't have the time to prepare raw each and every day, and it does take alot of time and skill to balance properly. And if you're worried about not doing it right or knowing what you're doing, a good canned food or kibble will make sure your dog gets the proper balance.
With our country's problem with even human food having problems with contamination and that some contamination goes away after cooking I would never even think about raw being the safest. Plus yorkies have longer hair/beards and I can not imagine the juices and other stuff that gets stuck and left in the there beard that then goes and contaminates everything there beard touches.

Time to weigh bulk order, trim, and place into approximately 30 ZipLock bags: 1 hour per month.

Time to grab ZipLock bag out of freezer, put in bowl, and put bowl in fridge to defrost: 30 seconds.

Time to grab bowl out of fridge, open ZipLock, empty contents into bowl, and give to dog: 45 seconds.

After reading the scare about chicken soup for the soul and hearing my groomers complaints, I am now trying canidae on Khloe. I am mixing chicken breast in it. Kirby eats innova but Khloe's stomach couldn't adjust to it. My head is spinning. I would have stayed with chicken soup for the soul if I wasn't afraid of the recalls.Khloe is not crazy about the canidae but I feel so limited in a small town.

Ya, but remember I'm feeding 9 dogs right now LOL Changes things a bit! And I travel quite a bit at times, so I like my dogs knowing they won't always get raw for every meal, even though I do agree it's the healthiest way to feed any dog!

I wouldn't recommend Canidae - made by the same company as Chicken Soup, at least for now, I hear they're going to start their own manufacturing again soon - but I'd steer clear for now! And Innova is made by Proctor and Gamble - one of the cruelest companies out there!

I well understand the small town problem - use to have the same issue! I discovered petflow.com - delivered to your door, competitive prices, and shipping is cheap or often free if you watch for promos. I've never paid more then $5 shipping - less then gas if you have to drive very far!

If you use that dog food rating site ~ TOTW gets fairly high ratings. So . . who knows.

I had Ringo on it a long time ago but didn't really like the 'output' I was getting, so to speak.

Right now, he is on BB Wilderness - Duck and he loves it - so far so good.

Lucy is on a prescription diet for bladder problems, and I have no hesitatation whatsoever to feed her that either.

The recalls are getting a little frightening.

More power to you! Understood!

P.S. There is a lady in another forum feeding 10 PMR, however, I respect both of you. That's dedication. I am glad you are helping so many lovely pups.

Woops, I actually counted wrong, Aiyana doesn't count as a dog, she's to spoiled LOL There is 10! And I've had more then that before! 6 are mine permanently (My Yorkie, Benjamin of course - Then I have 3 IGs - Aiyana, Hannah, and Pharoah, and 2 Afghans, Willow and Lola), 2 are long term fosters who will probably stay forever unless just the perfect forever homes come along (both IGs - Martini and Sara), and my 2 house guest Yorkies, Skeeter and Moose.

All that site looks at is ingredients also. Ingredient wise it's not bad! I like to look at the whole picture, including the reputation and reliability of who manufactures it!

Wow, glad I saw this. I don't feed any Diamond pet foods but I have a friend who feeds Chicken Soup to his dogs and he'll definitely want to know about this.

I was feeding Giorgio Natural Balance back in January his liver enzymes were up, I had tried TOTW, Candidae, Eukanuba and Royal Canin. After a recheck of liver enzymes and a BAT test in February, still elevated. Not off the charts but elevated. At that point I weaned him off the Natural Balance and start home cooking for him. It's a little time consuming but I make a big batch that will last for some time.

The results, just got his CBC back, his liver enzymes are within normal range, which pretty much summed up what I thought all along, it was the food. Giorgio has tons of energy, no more once a month diarrhea and vomitting. His poop doesn't smell anywhere near as bad and the brat actually wants to tackle me for his food. Lol. The vet at the University told me to keep doing what I was doing, Giorgis lab results looked excellent.

Canidae is a diamond food so if its made at the same plant as the other diamond foods that have been recalled it could shortly be recalled too.
