| Sonicare Gets 2 Thumbs Up From Both Vets! Took Sugar into the vet yesterday after she apparently had an encounter with a fire ant nest last week while with the petsitter Her entire muzzle is full of pustules and scabs and she has missing chunks of hair from scratching herself bald Vet put her on 2 different meds for pain and itching along with Aveeno baths and coconut oil on the hot spots. The bright spot of the visit was when Dr. Nina looked at her teeth (she has stage 3 periodontal disease and had 6 teeth removed December 2010). She said "Her teeth and gums look GREAT!! What are you doing with them?" ( I know I had told her before ~ but she must have been distracted ) So I told her again about using the Sonicare on her teeth. She then called in her new partner and they both gushed about how different her teeth looked than in the photos in her records!! They agreed that Sonicare is going into their new dental regime recommendations for pet parents So I left feeling that even if I failed to protect Sugar Baby from the Damn fire ants, I feel great about the current state of her oral care

| Poor Sugar and the ant attacks but and kudos to mommy for keeping her teeth and gums in great shape!!! Gotta get my two a sonicare...especially since Jada has a tiny mouth and lost 3 teeth (one abscessed during her dental two weeks ago)

| Poor little girl. Those fireants must have hurt her. That's really great news about Sugar's teeth. Great job!

| Poor Sugar. That must've been miserable. For the Sonicare brush. I switched Heidi over to one a few months ago. Took a while to get her use to it, but its doing a great job! I can definitely see a difference. Glad I spent the extra $ and time getting her use to it.

| Sorry about Sugar Baby and the ants, hope she gets better son. Sonicare tooth brush? Is that the human kind? That is what I use. Can I just a separate brush for my 2? I would like to try on them. The groomer does the teeth brushing but I do just run a regular brush on their teeth, they hate when I do it. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | That's awesome! I was a little leery of sonicare because I wasn't sure if the vibration would be too severe on a dog's gums, but with your vet's stamp of approval I think I'll give it a try. Is there a softer brush you use, or just the same kind they sell for humans?

| Congratulations on those teeth and gums and your dental program!!! Which model do you use and do you use the brushes that come with it or have to get other smaller ones? Ouch as far as the ants! What does the petsitter say happened there?

| I have a Sonicare that I had to quit using on MY teeth because it was loosening my caps!!! They are super! Now, I can just use it on my babies! I have ordered 3 different treatments for tarter and plaque, which I will use on 3 different dogs that are senior and I am scared to put them under for dental care...I will see which system works best, and then go with it! |

| That happened to us once, when we lived in FL, our vet advised keeping benedryl on hand in case it happened again. It never did, I just had to watch very closely for those ant hills. I even stepped on one once, so painful. Sorry about your pup getting into the ant hill.

| Poor Sugar! I hope her owies from those nasty ants heal quickly. I love the Sonicare for myself and can't live without it, but I can't convince my boys to let me use it on them. We are going to work on it because I'm convinced they would never need a dental if they used it.

| Thanks for all the well wishes for the ant bites. I'm pretty upset with the petsitter. Not that it happened, but that she didn't even NOTICE. it happened I use the Flexcare with the compact brush head. When I get my second pup I will just use the same handle and 2 separate heads. She tolerates it better than a regular electric toothbrush. It's quieter and it oscillates rather then just vibrates up and down. It does tickle her lips at times tho

| She did not notice?????? Is she familiar with dogs at all? Didn't she think it unusual your dog had to be at least rubbing her muzzle a lot, probably had VERY watery eyes and nose and was acting unusually? And then later, failed to notice the pustules, scabs and hair loss? She's lucky you didn't go for her throat!!! (Kidding, but not much.)
