I am so sorry to hear of Zhoie's Dx. I pray that there is something that they can do for her. Many, many prayers going out for her and you a well during this time.

All makes sense with her saying the spine, but some of the language threw me thinking it was chiari.
Actually there are other options for AAI besides surgery although I believe I would opt for surgery if it were my pup and the chances of success were good.

He said AAI. He said a collar could be tried, in her case the slightest movement would hender the healing process...didn't see even a 50% success rate with that. Already pressing to far in.

Tena, I am so sorry to hear this. I'm hoping others with her condition chime in so you can get a better understanding of your options. This must be so hard for you. I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry my words aren't clear and I know I must be confusing. I'm can hardly function...I'm so beside myself.

We have opted for surgery, now it's getting the 2-surgeon consult set up and proceeding.

Can anyone with experience with AAI offer suggestions on what kinds of questions I should be asking upfront.

Has anyone had this surgery done and can tell me what to expect. It all sounds ok on paper so to speak, but then when you actually live it....what will it be like for my girl??

Tena there are people on YT who have had pups with it and there is a yahoo group. YHR has had a couple of foster pups with it who have had successful surgery. I did not personally foster them. The one I have, like I said, cannot have surgery.

I am with you...I would opt for surgery if there was a good chance of them fixing it. I will keep your Zhoie in my prayers.

I have no idea about this surgery, but know you will have the best surgeon for her, and you are doing all that can be done. Stay strong and best of luck to you both.

So sorry just read the whole thread. Sending prayers and hugs. Stay strong and positive. I know how scared you must be for your little one. But sounds like it has a good percent that do well with the surgery. Hopefully it can be done soon and this nightmare can be behind you. I will be keeping you in my prayers and thoughts.

Sending prayers and positive thoughts your way. This sounds very similar to a disorder called Syringomyelia common to King Charles Cavaliers and other breeds. It has been seen in Yorkies also. You can check this out on some of their breeder's websites as well as clubs. I read somewhere when we were researching dog breeds that sometimes collars around their necks bother them as it irritates the area. Look for some support groups that are dealing with whatever the specialists decide it is. Research as much as you can, and I suggest you write down any questions you may have. As much as you can arm yourself with knowledge. I know when I have dealt with serious issues with my dogs it helps. At this point I know you are so worried...take care of yourself too. :aimeeyork

Syringomyelia is different from AAI. It is actually fluid around the spinal cord. I have a foster pup with AAI, chiari and Syringomyelia. The neurologist explained to me that the fluid was due to the chiari.

AAI is a problem where the cervical vertebra are not connected. Here is a good link about it:

Tena, Zhoie is in my prayers everyday. I'm so sorry your little girl is so sick. It sounds like you have a good plan in the works for helping her. You are such a good mommy and a good friend and I'm right beside you through all of this. Betty Boop sends Zhoie lots of luvin today.

Tena I just wanted to let you know that I have Zhoie in my constant prayers and you also. I know how overwhelming this must all be for you. Thank you all. Wanted to give you a little update on our progress. Decided the best place for us and I feel it's the most experienced in small dog neuro surgery would be to take Zhoie to Univ of Penn. It's about the closest (3.45 min) to us, but I believe a Univ will be the best. I will be calling Monday morning first thing to get a consult set up.

Though it's ripping my heart out to know, I will walk through those doors and with intent of putting my girl through this....I want to proceed as soon as it can be arranged. I'm so scared for her.

I am so sorry, Tena. :( How are things going now? I was also really concerned when reading about her neck. All too often neck problems in Yorkies turn out to be scary things. :(
