| Also wanted to point out, I'm not trying to start a big argument, but wanted to point out another perspective as I feel it's important that a new member reading this thread won't immediately be like "Omg, the food I am feeding is going to make my dog get pancreatitis!" I think super high protein foods aren't really necessary in a hard kibble, so I'm with you on not feeling comfortable going over 32%, but from my research and per both vets advice, a high protein dog kibble alone won't necessarily cause pancreatitis, IMO and their opinion. I'm sorry you deal with chronic pancreatitis I can't even imagine how painful it must be and I am sure you have a lot more knowledge than me that you could also add.Btw, there seems to be a lot more choices now when it comes to grain-free and a little bit less protein/fat! TOTW comes to mind, Fromm, Acana, Natural Balance, etc.

| I didn't hear about merricks' problems. Thanks for the info. I switched years ago from merricks to innova. Some people have problems with innova because of the p& g connection but I still think its a good food. |

| YT 2000 Club Member | I have one dog on SD rx I/D, 2 dogs on SD natural balance and one dog on RC RX hypoallergenic white fish and potatoe formula. All have worked out so far,it took us along time to work it out with sensitive stomachs, fatty blood problems, and food allergies..

Brit, I know you have been keeping up on all the different foods and manufacturers, and you have tried several with Jackson Cody (my teapot of almost 2 yrs old) and Cailee (my petite 3.5 lb 5 month baby) have been on Blue Buffalo (adult and puppy, respectively). Cailee has runny eyes and the Vet says it could be teething or allergies (Vet didn't think it was an eye or eye duct issue). I've tried Angel Eyes for 2 months with no noticeable improvement. So I decided to try TOTW "Sierra Mountain CanineFormula with Roasted Lamb"; it's "all life stages" to see if it could be a grain or chicken allergy. In reading the ingredients, this TOTW is 25% protein, which is LESS than Blue Buffalo (not by much but 26%). My question is are there others you have come across that have lower protein or is TOTW a good one to start? I guess I'm a little concerned with protein for my petite girl.

| For the past 2+ years I have fed Taste of the Wild. I rotate the varieties - no boredom here, just healthy happy yorkies with beautiful shiney coats. |

The only grain-frees that come to mind that are, like, 20% protein are Natural Balance LID. But some of them are really potato-heavy too. I wouldn't really suggest the NB formulas for most growing puppies (pups typically need more protein and fat). I like TOTW, a lot of people have great luck with it. It is a Diamond food and again, some have issues with Diamond. So it's really a matter of what you're comfortable with and most importantly, what she does well on.

| I just got my Lola a few weeks ago. I'm weary of the high protein for my puppy, so I'm feeding her Fromm. |

| Now I wish I knew how much protein Innova has in it. I threw the bag away and put the dog food in a container. Hopefully there isn't too much. Delilah hasn't had any problems with it though... but I'll definitely check from now on how much protein is in the food I buy. Thanks for all of the information. Does anyone know where you can buy Fromm from (preferably not online)?

| I really am loving Fromm right now, so far. I really like them as a company too. Hoping their food continues to work well for my dog (we just started feeding it). It's not so much about protein %, but it's important where most of the protein is coming from (i.e. meat sources vs. plant sources). IMO, there is no set protein percentage that a dog has to have... it all depends on the individual dog and what works for them. There could be two foods, both with 28% protein, but the dog could do horribly on one and not the other. It's more about the ingredients agreeing with them, etc. I do know that the original "high protein is bad" myth came from a study performed on rats, who are omnivores... and all the protein came from plant sources... so IMO, it makes the argument completely invalid. With that said, I don't think loading a dog up on super high protein kibble is necessarily good either.

| - I switched Riley over from Acana to Taste of the Wild about 4-weeks ago. He is doing Really Great with it... He gets Excited when it is meal time and I couldn't be happier with that. If you email the company they will send you a box of samples. Taste of the Wild : Contact Us Right now he is eating the Pacific Stream.... when he finishes that one I will switch him to Sierra Mountain. ![]() I also bought some of the Pacific Stream Cans and will sometimes mix a teaspoon of it in with the kibble. |
