Senior Yorkie Talker | Heartworm Prevention Its about that time for Amara. And us living in South Carolina there is a high risk of heartworms. I really need suggestions for the medications I should use. If anyone has any information to offer me. It would be very much appreciated. I can't have my little baby getting heartworms. They can be fatal. She is 18 weeks old. And the nurse from Richland Creek Animal Clinic suggested I get her started at about five months on heartworm prevention medication. I'm very worried and scared. She doesn't have them. Its just I worry alot about her. |

| You're vet will prescribe you the appropriate heartworm meds. I've always used Interceptor with my yorkies and have been very happy with it and had no heartworm issues ever.

| I use Sentinel for my girls per vet recommendation. I would ask my vet and see what he/she recommends.

| We use Interceptor, Sentinel, and Heartgard just depending. All are good drugs. You definitely don't want your pup getting heartworms, but this isn't something that you'll need to spend time worrying about. Just give a good product once a month, every month and enjoy your pup.

| We use Interceptor also...never had any problems with it at all. I worry so much too so I can understand. I make sure eats really good before I give it to her so she has something on her belly...just me I guess?? I still worry giving it to her but I sure don't want anything to happen from something I could of prevented...good luck glad she has a mommy who cares too

| We use Interceptor for dogs 1-10lbs. I chose it bc most other hw meds lowest dose is for dogs up to 25lbs or 50lbs. It's a tiny chewable that Bella takes excitedly, but Tillie prefers hers in a treat I get it thru DrsFosterSmith.com - they contact my vet for the rx and get it to me quickly. BTW, Sentinal is Interceptor with an added ingredient to kill flea eggs. Here's a chart if you'd like to compare products: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=580&c=9547& It's important to give every 30days bc the meds kill hw larvae before they can grow into worms... so by killing what they've been exposed to over the last 30 days, you are preventing infection.
