| Help with Pancreatitis As I sit here on my second pot of coffee my lil guy Tater is at the doggy hospital suffering from Pancreatitis due from, by what the vet said, cat treats. Always being used to big dogs who eat cow poo I figured a cat treat was safe. WOW, do I have alot to learn!! Hopefully he can come home today. Before all this drama his regular food has been Diamond Small Breed Puppy formula, No corn, No soy and No wheat. Will this still be an option after he's on the mend? I'm sure the vet will send me home with a food till he's feeling better. He's only 4 monthes old and never had an issue till now. I'm heart broken and now paranoid. |

| Welcome to YT. I am sorry your little guy is in the hospital and I hope he can come home to you soon. I would follow the recommendation of the vet for food. Discuss with your vet your desire to have him on a diet without the ingredients you mentioned. After one episode of pancreatitis, you do need to be even more cautious with things that can be controlled, like diet. Recurring episodes are often stronger and take a harder toll on the body. When it comes to feeding, dogs don't need more than their basic diet. They don't need fancy treats. If you want something to use as reward, use a piece of kibble. LadyJane bakes treats made out her dog's food. You could also try a tiny bit of safe fruits or veggies. There are some that may trigger pancreatic attacks in some dogs, like potatoes, so you will have to be cautious there too.

| Maximo gave great advice. My little Cricket had chronic pancreatitis. As Maximo said, once they have it once they are at an increased chance to keep having episodes of it. You should follow the diet the vet gives you to a T. We found any deviation would cause a repeat episode. I agree to follow Ladyjane's recipe for baking the prescription canned food into treats.

| Poor little guy. Jackson, my almost-3-year-old, just went through a bout of pancreatitis in July. He had to stay overnight hooked up on IV's, etc, but his was brought on by a lot of fatty people food he got into (chocolate cupcakes, sausage from the pizza, etc). How did your vet make the diagnosis? I did a lot of reading and saw that a lot of vets over-diagnosis pancreatitis, especially if they see on the blood work that the lipase levels are high, they automatically just say pancreatitis. It does seem a little odd to me that a 4 month old would get it, but I know it is possible.... my vet told me she mostly sees it in older dogs or overweight dogs. My vet, after a week, sent out for a cPL test (a canine pancreatitis specific test -- something or the other) and it came back in normal range, aka negative for pancreatitis. If I had known better, I would have requested this in the beginning... so you may want to ask your vet about it. I was sooo super worried and concerned about Jackson, you can find my thread somewhere, I was a wreck, haha. But things simmered back down to normal and now just as a precaution, I only give him kibble and wet food for his meals (it was difficult finding low fat canned foods) but the key is keeping their fat content low. I did put Jackson back on regular food (Castor & Pollux Organix Weight Mgt. to start). We are actually experimenting right now with California Natural grainfree to see if it helps with his eye stains, so far so good. Most dog treats are really high in fat, I've come to learn, but I did find Buddy Biscuits (the soft kind) which list a minimum and a maximum fat. Also, Jackson has been okay with Cheerios as treats too. However, I wouldn't be giving him any thing other kibble for a while. I only used the RX food for the first 3 weeks or so to calm his pancreas and tummy. A lot is still unknown about pancreatitis. Sometimes it just happens... there have been dogs who get it and they NEVER get fed table scraps, only kibble, etc. It's so confusing, to me, still. But there are a lot of knowledgeable members who helped me out during my time of "crisis". Good luck!!

| Thanks so much for the info and well wishes!! Great update on Tater. No pancreatitis thank goodness. After all I've read up on I was fully prepared to rearrange all the diets in the house. Apparently all he had was a bacterial infection which in a way is not the best of news because I have no idea how he got it so preventing it again has me puzzled. Very scary ordeal though, he was such a sick lil guy. |
