Senior Yorkie Talker | a cat flea collar on a yorkie??? hello yorkie mama's (& dada's)!!! just wondering, as my lil millie moo has quite sensitive skin, i dont really want to put flea drops onto the back of her neck as i dont want to irritate her. i was wondering....is it ok to use a cat flea collar on her? the usual dog flea collars that i use on my other dogs (not yorkies) seem abit big and bulky for her and also stands out way too much as shes so small (think las vagas flashing light saying "im wearing a flea collar!!!" ) and as cat flea collars come in attractive sparkly bright colour ranges, it would look better. are there different doses for a cat than there would be for a yorkie or would it be safe??? any help or tips on what you do with your yorkies would be a great help. may i also note, she dosent actually have fleas at the moment but its getting to that time of year where my other dogs have started itching and next doors dogs have caught them so as they say, prevention is better than cure!! x

| I'm not a vet, but I oppose flea and tick collars. Wearing one temporarily for outdoor walks may be okay (not sure if this would be fully effective against fleas), but there is a risk of the dog chewing on the collar if it is left on all the time. Our previous dog (85 pounds) didn't chew on her flea collar but I have a feeling that it may have been responsible for the cancerous growth in her mouth, close to her throat. We caught it early, the tumor was removed and she went on to live a full life. I don't have any evidence that it was the collar, just a feeling.

| The drugs used can be different (usually it's dangerous to do it the other way around - dog collars on a cat). I would not do it. How about Sentinel and then Capstar as needed?

Senior Yorkie Talker | we dont have those brands over here in the uk (that i know of) we have spot on and front line. we use front line on our other dogs but they are much bigger and hardier breeds whereas millie has very sensitive skin (as most yorkies do) we groom her everyday with a flea comb to get anything out before it has time to get worse and try not to mix our dogs with others at this time of year so as not to spread/catch fleas so a flea collar is just a precaution really, she would only wear it for about 1-3 weeks x

| I personally wouldn't use the collar at all. If she has sensitive skin, have you looked into using natural flea repellants, such as those which use essential oils? Does she get fleas at all or is it to prevent it? If you google natural flea repellents for dogs, you can find some formulas. Just an idea

| You can cause a lot of harm to your yorkie if you use it. First off, as it had been mentioned, you should not be using a cat product on a dog or vice versa, they are made this way with a reason. Second, a flea collar belongs inside the vaccum cleaner bag ! That is the only safe place to use it! You are better off with the regular reccomended frontline or revolution. best wishes. XOXO

| don't cross species on flea prevention. not safe at all. go to your vet and have him/her recommend something that will do the job but is gentle enough for your baby's sensitive skin. |
