Thank you for contacting Natura Pet Products. Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex – Currently the only AAFCO-approved, safe, and effective source of vitamin K activity for cat foods and treats.

Natura uses vitamin K3 or menadione in the form of menadione sodium bisulfate complex (MSBC) in the EVO Herring and Salmon dry cat food and the EVO 95% Salmon & Herring canned cat food (currently the only formulas this is used in). It is used to meet the requirement for vitamin K as established in the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles. According to AAFCO, vitamin K needs to be added if the “…diet contains greater than 25% fish on a dry matter basis.” Although Natura hoped to use vitamin K1 or phylloquinone to meet this requirement since natural sources like green leafy vegetables are not concentrated enough to do so, neither the FDA nor AAFCO currently recognize this natural source of vitamin K. Oral menadione supplementation in the form of MSBC is a safe and effective way to deliver vitamin K activity to cats.

MSBC is an “officially recognized vitamin” by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) that provides a source of vitamin K activity. Vitamin K activity is needed to prevent a coagulopathy or bleeding disorder. Typically, the gut flora or naturally occurring bacteria of the intestinal tract make adequate levels of vitamin K for their host dog or cat. However, when high fish containing diets are fed to cats, a state of vitamin K deficiency can occur leading to spontaneous bleeding that can be life threatening. Therefore, supplementation with a source of vitamin K activity is needed in high fish-containing cat foods.

Proctor & Gamble bought up Natura Foods. They also own Iams and Eukanuba. Apparently, nothing has changed yet. There was a rumor that menadione was added but that was never confirmed. I am unsure how I feel about the company right now... I might have to end up feeding it since they have quite a few nice low fat diets with not very many ingredients so, I'm just undecided thus far.

I received it in the mail yesterday.

Moses has been "not" eating his Nutro Ultra...and won't eat Innova, either. So I ordered him some Fromm Chicken ala Veg online, but have been freaked out coz he won't eat. So he and I took a little trip to a pet boutique here in town. I told them what a picky little turd he is and they gave me a bunch of samples. I opened the Evo ones first, gave him a couple of Herring and Salmon kibbles and he turned his cute little nose up. I then gave him a few of the Red Meat kibbles and Eureka!! He gobbled them! So I put some more in a little bowl and he scarfed it down! Geez...after I spent about $20 including the shipping on the Fromm brand! I guess if he doesn't like Fromm, I will go get him a bag of the Evo. The manager at the store told me that if P & G changes the formula in Evo or Innova, they will discontinue carrying it. I asked her about a recall, but it must have been the lawsuit that was in the back of my mind because she said there was no recall on these brands. Anyway, I thought it was so ironic that I found something he loves after I bought the Fromm! Murphy's Law strikes again!

A word of caution: Evo is in the category of the highest protein percentage, over 40%. It is one of the richest foods for a dog. Some do very well with it, but it is a dramatic change from Nutro.

The usual result of these consumer class action lawsuits is that the plaintiffs get coupons towards future purchases , but the lawyers make a ton of money. It's probably no coincidence that this suit was filed so soon after they were bought out by Mr.Deep Pockets, P&G.

Well Mo ate his Evo for one day and barely touched his food yesterday. I really don't know what to do with this picky dog. Can't wait to get his Fromms this week. I hope it provides some stability and consistency in his diet!

I have the same view of the majority of class action lawsuits: they accomplish little more than making trial lawyers rich.

I could be wrong, but I believe this lawsuit was filed before the P&G buyout.
