| Spay next week, what can I expect? I am soooo nervous about Pita getting spayed next friday because she's so little. What can I expect post-op, as far as care for her, her pain level, healing time? Oooo, nervous nelly here! |

| How old is she? Maddie was 3 when she was spayed and it took her a few days to be back to herself completely. On the other hand, Cooper who was 1 when she was spayed, was her old self by the time I picked her up from the vet's that afternoon. You should be given pain medication to help her manage pain and they should ask you to keep her calm a day or so. A good idea would be to make a list of questions and take with you to ask your vet during pre-op or post-op consultation. Also, she should have pre-op blood work done to ensure there are no problems she may face with being put under anesthesia. I was a nervous wreck with my girls, but they were fine and your girl will be too. ETA: Pita is a doll and I love her name. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Yes it takes a few days to get back to their old self and even than they are still a bit timid. I kept mine in their cage in the living room with us so I could watch over them. Make sure they are not picking at the incision and to keep them calm while they are recovering.

| I have no proof but in my experience, younger pups seem to bounce back a little faster. You will more than likely have to stay busy keeping her calmed down. Will she be given pain medication? |

| I hope you are right, that's how our lab was. Her first set of shots that I had to bring her in for she felt really bad all day and laid around. The last set with her rabies vac, they gave her puppy tylenol and she did not feel bad at all, amazing. I am quite sure they can give her some more of those meds, I will def ask! |

She is having a surgery that I would compare to a hysterectomy and definitely needs something to help her manage pain. I am certain her pain/discomfort will be greater than she experienced with just getting shots.

| I don't recall the exact medical name for the meds. The vet compared it to our Tylenol. My point was if they give her meds for shots then they would absolutely give her something for pain. I'm sure they know what's best. |

| ZoE had her sutures out yesterday from her spay two weeks ago. They gave her pain meds to take for the 3 days following her spay. I found a baby onesies to be the best thing to keep her from licking at her stitches. And I used her doggie stroller for a few days right after, so she couldn't run & jump around, but could be next to me while I was working on projects at home. She was completely fine after 3 days, but I still stopped her from jumping on furniture for a couple more. Hope everything goes well with Pita's spay and she's back to her old self quickly.

| I had my Baby Chan who is 10 months old and super itty bitty spayed yesterday. I had the blood work done a few weeks ago to make sure she was in good health. When I brought her home yesterday after surgery she was all groggy and she looked so weird. Like a person would after anesthesia and surgery. She was also on pain meds. Last night she moaned and groaned as they said she would. But this morning she was up walking around and starving! I fed her little bits at a time so she wouldn't throw up! And now this afternoon... I'm trying my best to make her relax but she wants to play! I have meds for the next 3 nights to keep her calm and pain free, help her sleep. I've got a cone on my baby, and she doesn't mind it at all, luckily! Very necessary as I've already caught her trying to lick her wounds! I was worried sick too! But try to be calm. My thoughts are with you and your baby. |

I started with a vet with Maddie who required all spay/neuters to be kept the night before the surgery and gave no pain meds She felt it was best that dogs experience pain to control their activity. That total baffled me and we soon found another vet. I am glad you are with a vet who takes the neccessary precautions. I will pray for your little girls safe surgery. Please, let us know when she is home with momma.

| My Sassy was spayed 2 months ago at 8 months old. she was 5 lbs then. She had inside stitches so I didn't have to worry about her pulling on them, she took pain med 1 time a day for 3 days. She was a little groggy when she came home but the next day she acted like nothing happened, just a little lazy. She had blood work that same morning and is in perfect health. She couldn't have anything to eat or drink after midnight. Shge came home the same day.
