| Getting my yorkie spayed My yorkie's 15 months old, she weighs 3lb and the vet has said she is healthy. I didn't get her spayed when she was younger as i was advised to wait until she was bigger/older. I'm worried about the risks of getting her spayed because she's so small. A friend of mine lost her Chihuahua because it was given too much anesthetic. She's very well trained and i keep her on a lead at all times when she's in season. Do you have any advice for me as i'm not sure what to do. I have spoken to my vet but i would like to know what other people have done. Is it necessary to spay her? Has anyone had any problems with getting their yorkie spayed? and what do you think would be best for me to do? |

| Spaying early almost eliminates the chances of her getting mammary. Once spayed, she also can't get pyometra (a life threatening uterine infection). Preop bloodwork should be done and a safe anesthetic protocol followed (there is a thread about this in the YT Library). I would spay her.

| I, too, would have her spayed. Becasue she is o small, just ask the vet ALOT of questions. They have a few additional medical things they can and will do with the smaller babies. I can't remember what it is called. But, she would have a bit more care becasue of her breed/size. My vet talked to me about it alot before I had a poodle spayed once. She was super tiny, It was my moms. They had a different kind of anethesia (I think is how they said it. But, anyway, Just talk with your vet and express your concerns. A good vet will tell you and show what they will do. Hope this helps and makes sense.

| I completely understand what you're going through as I struggled with the same decision a little over a year ago with my Tessie. When we adopted Tessie, she was almost 3 years old and barely weighed 3 lbs and she had not been spayed. Her small size as well as age had me soooo worried, but I did alot of research and realized that the health dangers of not spaying (pyometra, etc) outweighed the risk of spaying. I also made sure that I felt 100% comfortable with our vet. AND I am very thankful for the YT members that gave words of encouragement and shared success stories~ which really helped me. I started a thread on YT to ask for help in the decision to spay Tessie. "Please help with impt. spay questions" http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yorkie-health-diet/198435-please-help-impt-spay-questions.html I've copied some of the info from the thread that helped me when I was struggling with the decision to spay Tessie. | I had Abbi spayed when she was three pounds. I was also very worried, but the thought of all the things that can happen if not spayed outweighed any worries that I had. The vet did the appropriate blood-work to make sure it was safe to administer the anethesia. She was perfectly fine. My mom had her 4 year old, 2 1/2 pound yorkie spayed when my vet explained the different kinds of cancer that spaying prevented. She also was just fine. |

| My second Yorkie, Jilly, was tiny, frail at 3 lbs. and I waited until she was 6 1/2 yrs. B4 getting enough courage to have her spayed due to anesth fears. Finally, my fear of the dire health consequences and her hating to wear the Bitch Britches combined to spur me on and little bitty Jilly did fine. She overnighted at the vet's where they watched her BP, I checked on her frequently with the vet student on duty all night and picked her up the next day. She was still a bit loopy when I picked her up, slept quite a bit that night and by the 3rd day she was seemingly back to herself. I was certain to give her the dose of prescribed pain medication to keep her comfortable as dogs are so stoic about pain and don't show much of it like humans do;and was careful not let her lick the wound and by the 3rd day she was already ignoring the wound, not even trying to lick or pick at it. I was so happy that we had done it that I was over the moon afterward, knowing my baby was at less risk for getting cancer than before. I would be sure to take her to a doctor that is familiar with operating on very small dogs and used to dealing with their particular problems. Best wishes to you and your girl as she takes this next step in her healthcare.
