| the dreaded "bump" I noticed in December that Layla had a very small bump on her back- about 2 inches from her tail on her back. We were in Florida at the time so I thought it was a bug bite. It didn't go away and has gotten quite a bit bigger. We took her to the vet and she said to watch it- she called it something- something about a pocket of fluid that will not go away- may or may not get bigger. I'd say it is about the size of a pea now (which, when you are 7 lbs is quite significant- I keep thinking all of my friends with huge dogs must thing I'm going crazy over such a small bump). The vet said it might stay the same size or it might grow- I think it has gotten bigger. She says it will need to be removed before it gets to big that a local anesthetic won't work and she will have to be put out. Has anyone else had experience with this type of bump and the surgery required to remove it? I think I am going to call back this week and have the vet look at it again (too bad it costs $60 just to walk in there!) |

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | awwww Layla, so sorry sweetie. Very surprised they want to put her to sleep. Would hope they could do it with just local anesthia. I hope those with experience will give you some direction before you make the next move. Hope it's nothing serious!

| Sounds like a fluid filled cyst...not uncommon..best to have it cut out and done with...my daughters old Yorkie has one the size of a ping pong ball...started out the size of a pea...vet said to ignore it, not need to remove it...but now she is too old and it is huge... |

| Callie has a small bump on her neck that the vet looked at and used a syringe to take a sample of to make sure it wasn't cancer and I'm pretty sure what she called it was fluid filled cyst. She told me to watch it and if it got any bigger to come back in and they would probably have to remove it. Callie has had hers for over a year and there hasnt been any change to it and the vet asks me if there as been any change to it and then checks it over good again. Sense Callie's isnt growing or changing I'm leaving it alone for now.

| Aww poor Layla! My younger twin sisters' Yorkie, Cujo, gets warts and skin-colored bumps sometimes. We took him to the vet and she said they were Sebaceous Glands, or in this article they are calling it a cyst. Our vet didn't seem too concerned about it, she just stuck a needle in and drained the fluid. The bump was gone within a few days. She said just to bring him back in if he gets anymore, they go away quickly once drained. This article, Sebaceous Cysts In Dogs And Cats | MyPetsDoctor.com, says surgery is required if they get too infected and opens up. Hope this info helps you out! Good luck to Layla!

| YES- that is what it is! A fluid filled cyst! It has most definitely gotten bigger since we discovered it but I am not sure if it has stopped growing or not. Perhaps when the vet feels it she can decide what is best. YorkichonBella- they will only have to put her to sleep if I let it get too big- they want to remove it while it is small so that they can just freeze that part of her back (I sure hope they give her something to make her loopy because there is no way she would just sit there for them!) |

| My poodle had one on her right shoulder. It was an abscess that was fluid filled as well but benign. The put local anaesthetic and removed it. She had a couple of stitches and the hair grew back. My vet (at the time) said he saw those types of things secondary to injections (over that particular area) and was best to remove them. Good luck

| Really depends on the vet's philosophy. Lumps and bumps that don't look suspicious are left here as long as they aren't getting too much bigger. If the vet thinks it needs to be removed if it grows and that a local couldn't be used if it gets much bigger and you think it is getting bigger, then I'd go ahead and do it before general anesthesia is required (unless she needs a dental anyway). Removing lumps is no big thing. No reason to use general anesthesia unless it's really needed though. Though can sedate her alone with the local if she won't let them do it. With a couple restrainers, they may be able to though. Ellie had a punch biopsy on the top of her nose with just a tech holding her body and me holding her face. She did fine with it (she is an extremely wiggly girl). These types of lumps are almost never serious. Just another thing to have to deal with...

| Hi! Tink has a lump about the size of a dime... she was xrayed for something else and the xray showed a microchip right where the lump is. If it gets bigger it'll have to be removed. The lump is at the lower end of her ribcage close to her spine.

| My vet told me that Labs are actually known for getting these non-cancerous fluid filled cysts, but that all dogs can get them. My 11 year old lab had 4 of them removed several months ago. He had one on his front paw that grew substantially, one in his groin, one on his left side and another on the right front side. It was an easy procedure, the vet put him under and took the cysts out. The paw was the biggest concern because they weren't sure if they would be able to keep the skin closed. He had staples in all 4 areas. They sent the cysts to the lab to ensure they were not cancerous, and he healed fine. Not one issue. I think I was more worried about it all than Balance was. He took it like a champ, and left all the wounds alone except for the groin area. He did nudge the skin open there but they re-stapled and he was good. Good luck to you and your baby.
