My yorkie is 2yrs old and she all of a sudden started scratching her body. She has no fleas and no dry skin. Is it safe to give her the benedryl and what else can I do. I feed her Cesars wet food.

She may be having food allergies. Do you mean Cesar Selects or food by Cesar Milan? If it is the little cups of wet, Cesar Selects. I suggest you switch food. It could be a food allergy. I was told by my vet that feeding Cesar's Selects was like you or I eating chocolate cake for every meal. This is a very rich food, contains by-products, and not good quality imo.

As for giving you pup benedryl, I would never advise to administer drugs to your dog without consulting your vet. You vet or vet derm may be able to help determine the cause of itchy skin.

Ok my vet is the one that said give her benedryl just to see if it lightens it up. I just don't want it to hurt her. I am going to bathe her in oatmeal this evening. Also she's been eating the Cesar sun rise dog food for 2yrs would she all of a suddene be allergic to it.

I don't know anything about food allergies, but my little one is having allergies this time of year. The vet prescribed childrens claritin. I was afraid of giving this to her too - they are so little! She does seem to feel better w it; once I got up the courage to give it to her!

I give Bevo childrens benadryl for allergies...however it ONLY comes in liquid, so Ive found that a generic tablet form is easier to have him take! He spits the liquid out! I bought a pill cutter and disect the pill into 4 parts and give him 1 part twice daily. (I think its equivelent to .25 mg)

I soak up the liquid med with a treat broken up - sneaky mommy!

(Just in case you already have the liquid on hand.)

I tried that...even tried injecting it in treats...didnt get past him!! lol

It's fine. It's most likely environmental since starting at this time of year although food is a possibility? Is pup on flea preventative?

What does did the vet suggest?

Good luck!! Ive hollowed out a cube of cheese before and tried that approach too...mine just HATES the liquid!!

I know what you mean. Maddie had a reaction to Royal Canine after several months and it was horrible to see her so miserable.
If your vet suggests it, I would do it. I hope it helps her.

Its completely safe to give benadryl, and it doesnt have to be childrens. You give 1 mg per pound of body weight. You must give it twice daily for up to two weeks before you may notice a difference. SOme dogs show improvement within a day or two, others not for 2 weeks. Zyrtec has helped my dogs alot more than benadryl. But they are both completely safe for our little dogs. I am a vet tech, and we recommend it almost on a daily basis at our veterinary clinic. And yes, your dog may eat a dog food for 2 years, and then develop an allergy. In fact alot of dogs do, after eating the same food for 6 months or more, all of the sudden develop an allergy. And then some you know immediately that there is a problem.

If i were you i would change food also. that food is not a very good one. And there are alot of really good ones out there, that come in canned too, so you can find one yours likes. I would switch to something grain free. Taste of the Wild is what we feed, and they all love it. And its not too expensive, and its grain free, comes in a few different flavors too. WHere i buy it, its only 8.99 for 10 lbs, and about a dollar per can.
