Default Retained baby teeth

Hi All
Bella was 9 months on the 17th of March and had two of her baby teeth not come out. The adult teeth had also come through, so she had two sets of teeth. I had made an appointment with the vet to have them removed when I returned to Canada from Florida. I was brushing her teeth yesterday and was surprised to see one of them had come out on their own. I am so hoping the other one does the same thing. I had asked on a previous post if anyone thought the teeth would come out on their own and the general concensus was if her baby teeth were not out by 7 months they would have to be taken out. I just wanted to let everyone who has a yorkie that is retaining their teeth not to get discouraged if they seem to be taking a long time to lose them. I called my vet to see if I should still go through with the dental appointment and she said we would wait a little longer to see if she loses the other one.

Yeah I had a bit of a nightmare with Oliver's baby teeth. I had originally planned on getting him neutered and having his baby teeth removed all at once at 7 months, but his vet said we should wait to see if he loses his teeth. I waited til 11 months and took him in to get everything done (neuter, baby teeth removal and microchipping) and they told me that he had 14 baby teeth that STILL hadn't come out!! At $63 per tooth you can imagine my jaw dropped to the floor, but it was done and Ollie doesn't look like a little shark anymore with his layers of teeth lol. I wish I hadn't been so paranoid when he was playing tug of war with me about hurting him haha, maybe more of his teeth WOULD have fallen out!!

But yes his vet stressed to me the importance of removing them due to bacterial infections that could arise in their tiny mouths due to all the crowding. So make sure to have them removed!

My little guy had his teeth tken ooit at eight months. He had eleven taken out cause they weren't budging but my vet bill was the same whether he had one removed or twenty. They shouldn't charge you per tooth - that's ridiculous.

Thats what I thought! But I trusted my vet (and she really is great) but worries me in the future if and when any other services are needed....sigh.

I have brothers Zachary and Kuma both had not lost their baby canines an several molars which had not fallen out by 4 months. Kuma belonged to my son and he had Kuma neutered at 4.5 months and all 7 of his teeth were removed. However, I do not believe in neutering Yorkies before at least 6 months of age. I waited until Zachary was 8 months old because he was so little (less that 4lbs). I spent several weeks playing rough tough of war with Zachary and wiggling his eye teeth with my fingers. He didn't mind this playing and within 3 weeks all of his baby teeth were out! Thus his stay under general anesthesia was shortened quite a bit compared to his brother and the $ price was much less! Hope this helps! Dogs in the wild play very roughly when it comes to tug of war and doing this with toys meant for tug of war usually does the trick! BTW- My son's vet did charge by the tooth because it is more medicine used and more of their time. At least that was his comment as to why!

Buster had his two baby canine teeth removed and they also charged per tooth. They let me keep his teeth. I have them in a little box.

Default Double Canines pulled today

Brooke Lynn's double canines are coming out today. I noticed too that she has a few other baby teeth that she's retained. I read that it's not good to wait - that the extra teeth will crowd the roots of the adult teeth, giving them an extra early opportunity to start bacterial infections down there.

That's ridiculous! My new vet removes baby teeth during a neuter/spay for free, and my old vet charges I think $15 per tooth.

Princess has two retained baby teeth, her regular vet didn't spay her so they weren't removed. Her vet said since they're not too bad they can wait until she's due for a dental so they can just put her under once.

The two that stayed (I believe canine's) fit right in between the rest of her teeth, no overlapping, though they are close & I have to pick plaque etc. from them. I just wondered will she have those gaps for good once they are pulled or will the adult teeth move into place?

I think that is the danger of waiting - the adult teeth can get set into the bone permanently then after you remove the babies they will stay where they are.

This pic is probably too small, but these were Brooke's teeth this morning.

My Bentley's teeth look just like your Brooke's teeth. Double canines on both top and bottom. He also has the front four baby teeth on the top still hanging in there. I had him neutered at 6 months and he was still losing teeth so he didn't have any pulled at that time. Now I wish I had waited to have the neuter done because it's going to cost me another $300 to have these teeth removed. He is scheduled for June 1. The extra canines on the bottom are causing some of his upper teeth to be pushed out of place so I hope they will move back once the baby teeth are gone.

Yes- I am sure many of the retained baby teeth that people have pulled would eventually fall out on their own given the chance- but it is best to get them out because leaving them in can cause problems.

Got Brookie back and here canines were HUGE - the root was easily 4x the length of the canines I could see. They were never coming out on their own!! Glad that's over.

Default tikka's

Oh wow, I JUST noticed Tikka's this morning!
She's 9 months old, so I'll give her a little more time to loose it because she's getting spayed when she turns one! Unless of course I see any problem occur before then... here's a pic of hers. Def. have to stay on top of brushing this spot extra good too!

Looks like a retained baby tooth eh?
