| Trying to help harden stool? What to give. Here's my dilemma.. Harley had a stomach upset on Monday and ended up at the Vet. he's been off his medications for two days, and yesterday I started giving kibble slowly. Tonight was his first full meal on kibble, and well his stool is still really loose, he just had a mushy poop, and then a few minutes later a watery one. The other thing is we drove home tonight (2.5 hours) from my mom's house were we spent the weekend. What can I give him that will help him out, but not upset his stomach, we think it was a protein imbalance that messed his system up, Is pumpkin what I'm supposed to give him? I'm willing to run out to the store and get some if it'll help him calm his tummy. I've also heard that plain/vanilla low fat yogurt does the same, but I didn't know if with his stomach issues if that would be a good idea. His stools have been runny the last few days cause he's been on a bland and rather watery diet (watery rice, chicken and the last two days I added carrots). So I expected them to be pretty watery, but I didn't expect them to get worse. Thoughts? or do you think that he'll be fine. (he's jumping on me and running around right now). Thanks.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I wouldn't give any dairy if he has runny stools. You could def try pumpkin or small pinches of Benefiber. Did he have parasite in his system causing the upset? If yes, that really can take a while for them to stabilize. Although, if the poo is actually runny...that's more of a concern bc of dehydration, and it's really stresses their systems. Is there blood in the stool? Is it mucousy?

So if I get canned pumpkin how much do I give and is there a certain type I should buy? Does it get refridgerated after I open it? and how often should I give him some. Thanks

| A diet high in moisture doesn't cause loose stool (generally). Pumpkin is fine to try. I've always found it to make stool softer and not harder though. I'd skip the dairy. Any change after stopping the Metro?

| Ugh... stores are closed, I'm going to try to run to the convenience store down the road. Darn NS and their anti sunday shopping laws. Oh and I forgot to mention he has been drinking well so I'm not too concerned about dehydration, but will continue to watch him. Be back with the pumpkin soon though.

| I would suggest trying the Raw diet. My yorkie would get loose stools when we traveled and it made it difficult to travel with her. Since we have changed to the raw diet we haven't had any problems at all. As long as you are certain that it isn't a parasite that is causing the diareha |

| I have a holistic vet and she recommends to make plain white rice but use 4 times as much water. So say 1/2 cup rice 2 cups water. Boil the rice for the required time I usually do it a little longer. You will get a white watery liquid. Let this liquid cool down and it will become a goo/paste and give the goo/paste with the meals. I add a little of the rice but it is the goo/paste that does the trick. This really has helped Buster when he was having colitis issues. She also recommends giving apple without the peel she says the pectin in apples helps bind them. I also have Buster on Jarrow Petdopholis to keep his system running smoothly. Good luck. I hope things firm up!

| Have you tried oatmeal yet? Works wonders, with consistency and bulking up the feces, also great for the GI tract. |
