| Hair breakage I'm worried about Zoey and I was hoping you guys could help. I posted on YD as well, but you guys are great here as well and I thought you might be able to help me... When I gave Zoey a bath last week, I noticed that all of the hair on her lower chest (between her front legs) had broken off very short and it wasn't like that the week before. The rest of her fur looks fine. It's coming in really nice and shiny and looks healthy. She had a vet visit the next day and I showed him the hair that came out when I dried her (more than usual, but not tons) and her chest. He said all dogs shed and the amount I had was normal and then said since the hair on her chest was growing back in, not to worry about it!! My husband said I could take her to another vet if it would make me feel better, but he really thinks it happened from her harness getting a little small on her. So I bought another harness and collar. Last night I noticed a lot of shorter hairs on her back legs. There is a lot of longer hair on them, but there is probably the same amount of shorter hairs. Now I don't know if I'm just worrying too much or if she has a problem here. The hair on her legs could be new hair coming in (she's fifteen weeks old), but it could also be more breakage. I'm taking her to a new vet tomorrow, just to be on the safe side, but after reading about all the things it COULD be, I'm really worried about her. I was just wondering if anyone here had the same situation and how it turned out? |

| Their hair can get right ratty looking as they are growing up! Higgins has the cottony hair and he doesn't have a lot of it. He's silver on the top of his head now and silver is showing up on his back. His legs are a beautiful tan/red as is his mustache. But it is all changing. Gradually it is getting silker, but I don't think he'll ever have a really great coat, which is one reason I keep it short. See what the new vet thinks, but I wouldn't panic unless there are big bare spots or a rash or something or it's coming out in big clumps. Yorkies don't really shed their hair, but when I brush Higgins, I usually get some fluff..... Keep us posted. |

| We didn't get Toto until she was 16 weeks old so prior to that I don't know what her hair might have done ... it was just kinda short & spikey ... cute! The vet told us it would change texture as she began to "grow her coat"! It was that "cottony" texture that Mary Ellen described for a long time. A few months ago it began to change and at 1 year it's long and silky and much easier to care for because of the texture! Don't get me wrong ... the long coat isn't easy if it's not brushed regularly. If I brush Toto every day it doesn't get hardly any mats but if I let it go for a couple of days it's a mess, expecially the topknot! She likes to be brushed and is very patient ... will even lay on her back in my lap to be brushed! Be sure to keep the upper 1/3 of the leather shaped and cut very short inside and out or the long hair will pull the ears down and they won't stand up. I always brush her really good before her bath and make sure there are no mats. The only hair she "sheds" is the loose hair in the brush! After I shampoo her, I put a thick conditioner on and after it's worked into her coat I let it sit for a minute or two and then thoroughly rinse. She likes to snuggle in a big dry towel to damp dry, then we brush again! Always "spritz" with diluted conditioner [I use Coat Handlers] as you brush to prevent the hair from breaking!

| Yes, I think it's a baby hair issue. If lots and lots are falling out, then perhaps your little guy is allergic to something (food or otherwise). But if it's just a little bit of hair, it should be okay. But, if you are truly worried about it, take him to another vet for a second opinion, one that has dealt with Yorkies of course! |
