He Drinks Lots of water, And Pees A Lot. and Always Hungrey Hes new To Are Fam, He is An Older Yorkie hes About 7, And the lady i got Him From has Lied To me About Every Thing About Him. She Told me he Was Only 2. And very healthy. Well We Found Out hes 7 Years Or Older. And Has REALLY REALLY bad Dental And Also Has nuclear sclerosis. I Think both Might be caused From Suger Diabetes. Not Sure. The vet Has Told me Hes Well Over 2 And Is Around 7 or Older...But If He Really is 2 Years Old And Has Suger Diabetes, Doesent It Mess With Eyes And teeth? If it Its Not Suger Diabetes How Can I Help The nuclear sclerosis? And if he Does Have Suger Diabetes How Is That Treated? (Thanks Paul) |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi Paul - firstly, please do NOT restrict his water right now at all (not that you are ). If he has Diabetes Insipidus (vs Diabetes Mellitus), restricting water could result in death. The vet can run bloodwork that will rule in/out DM first. Of course, a full blood panel should really be done due to the polydipsia (increased drinking)...bc other things could be going on. He should also be considered for Cushings Disease. If he does have DiabMell - he'd need to have his blood sugar checked daily, and then given insulin injections (daily, at least). Insipidus, which is more rare - is managed in by other meds that help manage his body fluids. The nuclear sclerosis can be seen in mid-age / older dogs. Just make sure you're confident that the Vet is sure it's not a cataract....bc cataracts are common w/ DM, and if it is a cataract, it has to be evaluated in order to be treated. Please keep us posted on this fella !

| Mine was on Humlin N insulin, which is a human insulin. He was on 17 units twice a day. We went thru the insulin pretty fast. I bought the BD Ultra fine, 31 guage needles and they are about 20.00 a box. Their diet is also important plus giving the medication at the same time each day is important too. Ours lived 2 yrs. after being diagnosed and I would do it all over again for him. Hope its not diabetes but you need to find out asap and get him on medication. Good luck and he's fortunate to have someone to help him and love him. My vet told me not too many people would have done all we did. Some just put them down. I just believe in trying all you can as long as you can. |
