Taking Maya in the airplane - help please.

Hi,

I am going back home in few months and I have to take Maya with me this time. The flight is 11 hours non-stop, but fortunately she is going to be with me in the cabin. My main concern is - bathroom! Maya can hold herself for long time but still...! I was wondering if I should ask the vet to give me something for her. (to sleep/relax..)

Anyone here travelled with their dog on a transatlantic flight? suggestions are welcome!

My mom flew with her 12 year old, 2 1/2 pound yorkie to Europe twice and Kiri just managed to hold it. I don't know how she did it, but she did. Mom said that she had her little legs crossed by the time they managed to get her outside and find a tiny patch of grass.

Good luck! I'm pretty sure that my dogs couldn't possibly last that long. I would put a potty pad in the bottom of the carrier and take a plastic bag (or three) with me and some replacement pads, just in case.

maybe take some potty pads with you, and a couple times during the flight, take her into the bathroom and put the potty pad on the floor for her to use?

I thought about it. I hope the crew wont see me because I am not allowed to take her out of the cage. My sits are very close to the bathroom just in case.

Can you use a soft sided carrier? Some airlines allow it and I was able to use my Kwigy bo. I know I could have easily picked up the Kwigy bo and just taken Kaji to go potty in the bathroom if I needed.

Just take the carrier with you to the restroom and wait to take her out until you are in the restroom. If the crew says anything about taking the carrier, just say "I wouldn't leave my purse under the seat while going to the restroom, why would I leave my beloved baby?!"

Is Maya peepee pad trained?? Take the bag into the bathroom on the plane, and open the baby changing table. Put the pad on the table and let Maya out of the bag. No one cares what you do in the bathroom and she can relieve herself during the flight. I fly twice a year with mine transatlantic and he does great. Good luck!

No, she is not... she is fully trained to go outside, this is why I am concerned and thought about asking from the vet something that can make her feel comfortable.

Buy some pee pads and try a trial run in a gas station bathroom.... the pee pads have a scent on them, which makes them want to pee on it.

I haven't tried it in a plane yet, but Harley is grid trained (in the house) and he still uses the pads when we travel.

At least with a trial run, you'll know whether she'll go on them.

I'm sure this is a DUH reaction but I didn't know the pads had a scent on them, what brand? This would be good news esp. for emergencies, travel, etc. Thanks for the info.

I think rescue remedy is suppose to help calm dogs down in stressful situations.

Remy's traveled internationally

His longest travel time was 14 hours

I had one of his pee pads with us, I had "treated it" with his urine and carried it in a ziploc. At two different airports he was out of his carrier and we tried to pee. To be honest, he was too terrified to even go. I had him up on the baby changing table, pad out, and he was just looking at me, as if to say, "seriously"??

Once we arrived at our destination he went for about 40 seconds straight, lol. he was a champ.

I'd suggest taking the pee pads with you, and maybe also some wet wipes just in case you need to clean something up but based on our experience I bet she will hold it the entire time.

Not a DUH reaction. It's a good question in you're not familiar with them. Most potty pads are scented to encourage dogs to use them. These work great and the price is right:

I potty pad trained Sydney, but she will also go potty outside. Prior to traveling, introduce your dog to the potty pads. When he/she uses them, praise like crazy. They work well. When my mom and dad's Yorkie couldn't hold it (she was dancing and crying in the car) I whipped out a potty pad, she did two circles on it, and she squatted. Sydney has also used them in the car. I'm sure they would work well on a plane. Safe travels!

I thought it meant it had some of the dogs pee on it already so they knew what to do lol Whoops! I didn't know they came "pre-scented"
