Not a DUH reaction. It's a good question in you're not familiar with them. Most potty pads are scented to encourage dogs to use them. These work great and the price is right:

I potty pad trained Sydney, but she will also go potty outside. Prior to traveling, introduce your dog to the potty pads. When he/she uses them, praise like crazy. They work well. When my mom and dad's Yorkie couldn't hold it (she was dancing and crying in the car) I whipped out a potty pad, she did two circles on it, and she squatted. Sydney has also used them in the car. I'm sure they would work well on a plane. Safe travels!
