Make sure you have your vet check him if he's not dramatically better by Monday. Kennel cough can go into pneumonia. Do you have a vaporizer? That will help loosen the congestion. | |

| Knox has had this same thing twice. Both times after I myself had a cold. Exactly same symptoms, stopped up nose, wheezing, and coughing. Vet said it was allergies, dogs don't get colds, etc... I consulted another vet. He gave me a script for amoxicillin. It cleared him up in two days. It happened again several months later. I didn't hesitate to get him another script for amoxicillin, and it cleared him right up again. I know exactly what you mean. Yorkies snort and grunt and do the reverse sneeze thing, but having a stopped up nose and coughing and stuff is a whole different deal. |

| It is hard to say and sometime they end up with a secondary infection. Over a three to ten day incubation period, the pathogens temporarily destroy the protective cilia (little hair like structures) lining of the larynx, trachea and bronchi. Once the cilia are destroyed, the upper respiratory tract becomes irritated and the dog begins coughing and showing other symptoms of illness. Without the protective lining, the pathogens may also move into the lungs and trigger a secondary infection in some dogs. The most common bacterial cause is bordetella brochiseptica. Kennel cough symptoms for viral and bacterial infections are similar. Yet the infection type can make the difference in the duration of the illness. Bacterial infections may last longer than some viral infections. The most common secondary infection is pneumonia. Signs of kennel cough with a secondary infection include: Fever Deep, congested cough Thick nasal discharge Labored breathing Fatigue Loss of appetite Cases of kennel cough with a secondary infection can last for any period of time between two weeks to three months. Veterinary attention is required to help a dog recover from kennel cough complications. Hopefully, the antibiotic is quick and you will have no secondary problems and the kennel cough will be a light case. Humidifier is good and the honey helps with soothing throat and a little energy. We are keeping you in our prayers. Mary

| Well, good news.... Jackson is definitely getting better. It seems that Nala, his little Yorkie girlfriend, has kennel cough too I guess they were all over each other a little too much.... sooo, today was his third day of antibiotics and he has barely coughed/hacked all day, but we've just been taking it easy, and no major running, etc. He should be back to himself in no time!

| Kennel cough is actually a generalized term used to cover all sorts of respiratory infections/doggy colds. So one instance can be much different than another as they may be due to different types of infections. Just read through and see Jackson if feeling better -- great news!

| I am so glad Jackson is doing so much better. Ah ha on the playmate. It is just too easy for them to get something just like when we put our small children together! I hope you are feeling better too. What a wonderful support group we have in YT. Someone is always there. This is such a great forum. Again, take care...

| 5th day of antibiotics and he seems 100% back to normal. Yay! I still have not had him running around like himself yet outside since it's been so cold, I figure the cold air can't be good for his throat, right? But yay, no hacking/coughing and totally himself! Thanks for all the support
