Thanks Snow. I'm just getting them used to being outdoors.. I don't think they had ever been before I got them.. but I really had had my heart set on litter trained dogs as I myself hate the cold.. (shouldn't be living in Ottawa then right?) which is why I chose yorkies as I had met another litter trained yorkie..and thought how tough can it be? silly me..

[QUOTE=crispyk;3346144]Thanks Snow. I'm just getting them used to being outdoors.. I don't think they had ever been before I got them.. but I really had had my heart set on litter trained dogs as I myself hate the cold.. (shouldn't be living in Ottawa then right?) which is why I chose yorkies as I had met another litter trained yorkie..and thought how tough can it be? silly me..[/QUOTE I would work on getting them outside trained first. If you see them peeing outside say the word "Potty" and then praise and reward. This is tough for some yorkies but by doing this you can train them to pee on command. Then when you think they have got it I would bring the litter box outside and take them there first and say the word potty. Slowly move the box closer to the house and then bring it in. Training to do both inside and outside at the same time can be confusing for some dogs so it's best to start off their training outside. I'm not crazy about the cold either but you have to work it out. I bought a heated vest and it really keeps me toasty for those 4:00 am walks. snow

Well yesterday/today went much better. Had a successful walk/outdoor toilet use and a successful indoor potty use as I closed up the litter area and put them in it til they went. Either place they go I'm rewarding them for it. Just trying not to freak out to loudly if they go in the wrong place but so far no accidents on furniture or the floor (pee wise) in the past 24 hrs. They really aren't crazy about being on leash.. I have the vest/harness for them and little 'ski jackets over top'. Just wondering if another one is recommended over another? When I have them in the backyard I have them dressed the same way but let them run free and only grab the leash if need be. (they could get under the fence in parts if they figure it out)

How much do they weigh now? Once they hit three pounds it should be perfectly safe to have them neutered. Just make sure you get pre op bloodwork and are careful which anestheisa your vet uses. There are some good stickies in the YT Library on the subject. The longer you wait to have them neutered, the more established marking behavior becomes. With two it will be especially challenging because males will mark one another's scent.

Thanks! They are 3 and 5 lbs. My vet did say if I get into difficulty and can't stand it anymore we can talk about neutering them earlier. She also recommended a person to come in and help me with these issues.. I will be calling her soon I think. It was recommended to me today by a friend that has dealt with rescue dogs "that your dogs are acting dominant and you need to reverse the roles in order to make the rules. As long as they think they are dominant they will do as they please. Spoiling them contributes to the idea that they are alpha. A calm firm voice and calm firm actions and only allow them treats when they have done something good. Do not treat them for just looking cute or because you feel like it. They need to earn their treats and need to learn to want to please you, and doing what is expected of them is the only time to reward them. Otherwise they get confused and you are not being consistent. She also agreed that you may have to go back to basic training 101 and only move to the next step when they have mastered the first one. By that I think she means keeping them in their own quarters with paper (or piddle pads) and leave them there until they are using it unless you are doing something with them. When you're not doing something with them then they go back to their area. Having too much room and space makes it harder for them to learn that they have a designated area for voiding. Being in a smaller area teaches them sooner. " This makes sense to me.. I hadn't really thought about that being an alpha thing.

Just wanted to update those who have tried to help me. The boys are doing much better.. I find whenever I bring something new into the house they want to mark it.. but they are understanding that going on the pad or outside is something they get a treat for and are doing either one of those 90% of the time now. Thanks for all the advice from folks. Now to get ideas on food again..see you over there!

HELP!! The yorkies are driving me nuts lol.. I just got a 2 1/2 yr old male from an elderly lady, he is NOT trained. This is not helping me train my 4 mo old puppy. I do the crate thing, which they pee in. I had his pee pad in the crate and saw that it shouldn't be in there, so he's still peeing an pooping in there. BATHS ARE EVERYDAY!! AAAAHHHH!!!! The crates are bigger than them which is not hard to do since they are very small. Advice????

I feel your pain...believe me. All I can say is get them outside as soon as possible when you see they might pee and reward them profusely for it. One thing I did was to set up an area where I would put them til they peed.. but if I didn`t watch them I had no idea which one would be successful and I would reward them both with a treat.. hoping they would catch on. The area was the size of a play pen with a pee pad covering 1/2 of the area. I used a small hallway near a pantry in the kitchen with 2 baby gates. I also got one of those indoor green pad (looks like fake grass) things and Max seems to like using that. I praise him up the wazoo for it but my only problem now is he thinks if he merely goes to sit on the pad he will get a treat. It's kind of funny.. but it's my own fault. He showed me his success and I rewarded him for it with a treat.. They got used to going outside and then started going in front of the back door on the floor so I moved the pee-pad and green fake grass thing there.. it's a bit awkward to step around but they do go there now 90% of the time instead of on bedding. I'm still too chicken to have them sleep with me so they are crated at night.. and they are now 9 months old so getting through the night more often without going on their own bedding.
