| Help with Giardia My Roxy just tested positive for Giardia and we started the rounds of medicine this evening. I was trying not to freak out thinking of this being passed to my children or I...does anyone have any suggestions for handling the situation as far as cleaning and preventing any further spreading? Roxy is 17 weeks old and is being crate trained...she never messed in her crate but I started worrying that I need to bleach everything: her crate, toys...HELP!! thanks in advance... |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome. Last year I fostered a pom puppy that had Giardia. I was really worried about my 3 girls getting it but they were fine. I made sure to clean up really good where she went and thoroughly washed my hands a lot.. I didn't know she had Giardia when I first got her so I didn't keep her separated from mine. That is just my experience with it. Hopefully you will all be fine.

| The vet found one giardia cyst in my little rescue dogs poopie...That was 10 days after she came to us, and I didn't know about it...Anyway, my pups didn't get it...Cha Cha, the rescue, didn't have diarreah, so I didn't suspect anything...I always picked up poop, but didn't go to any extreme measures...However, I would had it been diarreah...I think a weak bleach solution in the spot should take care of things, and, of course, washing your hands thoroughly...I don't think really healthy pups pick up things like that... |

| Thank you so much for your responses! Any information is really helpful and appreciated...Roxy didn't have any symptoms either...normal stools, she has been eating well and gaining weight since we brought her home. I heard that Giardia is difficult to get rid of so I've mentally started going down the very paranoid road... |

| I got a puppy that tested positive for giardia and just like you didn't want my kids, myself or my other yorkie to get it. My 2 yorkies slept together in the laundry room area and were together all day long. They are pee pad trained (at least my older yorkie is) so I cleaned up after them when they went - right away. I really didn't use any special cleansers - just a regular cleaning solution when he missed the pads. Thank goodness, my othe yorkie did not get - and my paranoia had the vet test them both tested twice after that. They say it is hard to detect and hard to get rid of. So for precautions, I have been sprinkling diatemaceous earth into their food. This is a natural substance (no chemicals) and will get rid of any types of parasites. So far so good. Don't worry. If you clean up after the puppy - right away - you should have no problems getting rid of the giardia. Good luck.
