| Metronidazole My 15 month old Sadie, who has "always" done well with her food (Wellness) has recently started to have bouts of slight vomiting and (the major issue) some mushy stools & today downright diarrhea. She did get her "big girl shots" this past Friday.. Saturday evening she had her first loose stool (prior, they've always been solid). Sunday her stool looked better, and all the while she's been eatting, playing with the cats, as she normally does. Then Monday night she had yet another loose stool and some slight vomiting of her food. Tuesday, all seemed normal again, she ate normally, played with her kitty friends, and that evening had a somewhat normal stool. Wednesday (this morning) I found she had thrown up some undigested food and also she immediately had a very very watery stool, seemed lethargic, and wouldn't even play with her kitty friends.......so I called the vet. Also took a stool sample to the vet.. Sadie had no fever, vet said she had no sign of dehydration, but the stool sample showed a slight bacterial infection which he explained "could have" been brought about by stress (perhaps from her Friday vaccines or the hoopla here at the house because we're preparing for a visit from family coming in from Texas). He put her on Metronidazole and said we should see "some" improvement within 24 hours, and if not, call him immediately. MY question is, have any of your fur babies gone through something similar and put on this med. She's been lethargic since the vet visit at 2PM earlier.. but I have gotten two dosages (liquid) in her since. The vet said no special diet, her regular diet but cut back. Sadie has NO Interest at all in food, but has sipped some water. With my family arriving tomorrow, I'm trying to be sure to do all I can to make things right for her and am only wondering if ANY of you have gone through something similar with your little ones. I am grateful for all/any replies.. and please put out positive thoughts that sadie will indeed tomorrow .. so worried xo |

| Sorry your baby isn't feeling well..Fiona was just on Metro a few ago, howeer, when they are on that, they usually shouldn't be given their normal food, my vet had her on a bland diet for a couple days until I notice her stools were back to normal. I would try making some white rice and hamburger meat for a few days. Metro is an antibiotic so you wanna give it with food, not on an empty stomach....did your vet do any xrays or anything!? Might be a forgien object in the stomach!? Good Luck.....I noticed Fiona perked up after the first dose of metro....

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I would also suggest keeping her in a quiet place where she won't be too excited by new people in the house. If your family is like mine, everyone will want to hold her and that might upset her tummy even more. |

| When there is a bacterial infection or what is known as enteritis and Metro/Flagyl is prescribed an antibiotic that stays in the digestive tract and prescribed for giardia too. Enteritis can be caused by anything. The way you can usually determine that it is enteritis is a drop in body temperature and tummy gurgling. Change in food, water, or just picking up something from the ground. Stress from the shots could have caused the loose stools too. A bland diet of steamed rice and boiled, boneless, skinless chicken (white meat) should be given, no hamburger too much fat and can cause further complications. The stools should begin solidifying withing 24-36 hour period. Bland diet should be continued for about 5 days, but slowly adding kibbles about 3rd day.....with just a few at a time.

| My dog was on the same RX this summer when he had a few days of diarreah (I know I didn't spell that right!). The vet thinks he had eaten something that made him sick. It had been very hot here and she thought it was some type of bacterial thing. |

| Also, my dog didn't want to eat either so the vet gave me two cans of a/d dog food. She also recommended boiled chicken (no skin) and rice or baby food chicken. My baby didn't like the baby food but he did like the a/d but only if I fed him off my hand, which I gladly did, just as long as he ate. I put the boiled chicken and rice in the food processor to squoosh it up and he ate that too. Then we gradually introduced his regular dog food again. Hope you baby is better soon. |

Amforal and Kaobiotic was what was prescribed in the past for treating bacterial enteritis. However, both were taken off the market and Metro/flagyl was found as a replacement.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | One of mine has a lot of tummy problems and the vet gave me the metronidazole. I give it to he when she has an episode. Her dosage is 1 a day. I don't know what your vet prescribed but 2 dosages since 2 pm seems a lot. Maybe just double check the dosing to be sure.

| Dosage is dependent on the Mg or cc if the liquid form. Vet's recommendation is also dependent on the level of the problem.

| My Westie was on it last summer for enteritis. He also got a special canned food along with it; that was supposed to be easy to digest. Together, they cleared up his tummy issues ~ but we had to keep him on the special canned for for an extra week. He loved it anyway.
