| weight gain? I posted not too long ago about Tila being a little chubster. She needs to lose some weight. I've been given her carrots and green beans in with her kibble. I've increased her exercise routine. But she's gained 2 oz since the last time she was weighed at the vets. I had to go pick up Simba's medication today and took Tila for a ride and weighed her on the scale. She hasn't been having treats except a couple pieces of banana and apple. She has been getting more exercise, but yet she gained 2oz. I was sitting there scratching my head as to how. She hasn't been getting into any other kibble. She eats 1/4c in the morning and 1/4c in the evening. Am I doing something wrong? |

| What brand of food are you feeding and how much does Tila weigh? I wouldn't rely completely on the scale unless you have a fairly accurate small scale at home and weigh your pup at the same time of day. We have a really good baby scale at home and my guys swing 2 oz up or down depending on when they eat and eliminate. Pay more attention to Tila's body. Can you feel her ribcage and does she have a waist? If not, she is carrying extra weight. |

| Tila eats Acana, she was on the small breed formula, but she's been on light and fit. She last weighed 8.6 and now she's 8.8. Well that's what their scale says. I do need to look into buying a scale. She does have a layer of chub. You can see the extra on her chest too. So I do know she's overweight, like I said before I didn't notice the extent until I cut her hair a little bit ago. I've been working on getting her moving more and eating veggies with her food. I will just keep doing what I've been doing. We'll work on it. |

| Some veggies are better than other for this. Carrots would be higher in calories than some others. Does she like lettuce? Cooked celery? The kibble may need to be cut back more too. Bloodwork normal?

If they write it 8.6 and 8.8, then that is actually in tenths of a pound and not ounces. She now weighs 8 and 8/10 pounds. So, she gained 2 tenths of a pound (.2). One tenth of a pound (.1 lb) = 1.6 oz, so she gained 3.2 ounces. Too much nit-picking? Go ahead, you can throw a virtual snowball at me or something. How old is she and how long since the last weigh in? You have gotten good advice about going more by how her body is proportioned than the actual weight. Even drinking a lot of water before weigh-in can have a big impact on our little ones' weights. HAve you discussed the weight issue with your vet? I am not in favor of "lite" foods for puppies, not sure how old your Tila is, but hope well over a year old. As for carrots -- I think they are pretty low in calories -- a WHOLE cup of chopped carrots is only 52 calories. Carrots got bad reviews for having a high GI (glycemic index) but mixed with her other food in small amounts I doubt there will be any rise in sugar levels. Their great nutritional value is worth it to keep them coming! I use the tiniest baby carrots (not the shaved down big ones made to look like little carrots) for treats for my dogs, especially in the hot summer. Green beans are always good too. Minr like them from the can, but if you do get canned, better to stick with low sodium -- frozen ones are better, I think.

| Hey, no problem. I won't be throwing anything. They have one of those big scales on the floor. So if I can get a bit of understanding on how the weigh in's work, it's all good. She eats carrots, the baby ones. Not a lot. I've been giving her more green beans, frozen than anything. She LOVES green beans. Everything is normal. She's 2 and a half years old. Her last vet visit, weigh in was I believe two months ago. They said she was 8.6 and now when I weighed her at the clinic she was 8.8. She is small. She's 8" from floor to shoulder and 12" in length. Short legs. She's got a small, little head and face. lol. She's really not big at all, which is why I'm worrying so much about weight gain. I want her to be a healthier weight for her frame, I don't want her to have health problems or problems with her knees. I know she is somewhat overweight because I can see the extra yes, fat on her chest. Would it be better to just stick with the Acana small breed, but cut back her portion size a little? I just feel horrible. I know it's my fault she's overweight. I think I will take her for a visit with the vet and discuss her body issue and see what she says and advice she may have. Thank you everyone. Last edited by Roxy 87; 10-02-2010 at 06:30 PM. |

| According to me if you want to gain weight than you have to take protein powder as a supplement. |

| I would just lessen her food a little bit. My 15lb'er eats 1/4 cup in the AM and 1/4 cup in PM of Acana Grasslands and he is at a healthy 15lbs and does not need to lose weight. He's also super active, agility once a week, dog park twice a week (where he typically will run for nearly 2 hours straight), my dads house along with his fenced in yard and 2 dogs twice a week where he runs ALOT, he gets a bike ride once a week where he runs alongside my bicycle, or I am on rollerblades. He also swam a few times a week all summer long. Just to give an example of how active he is and how little he eats... he can eat up to 3/4 cup per day some days, it all depends on his activity level. But if I were you, I would just lessen the feeding by a little bit.
