| Question about raw and protein content My husband gave the dogs a bit of raw bison last night and they liked it. I was going to stop by the pet store and pick up a small bag of Nature's Variety raw bison for them. I looked it up on their website and it only has 11.5% protein. Their Instinct kibble has 35%. Am I missing something? Why such a difference? I don't like super high protein but 11.5% seems a little low I thought. I don't plan to feed raw exclusivley but just wanted to ask those of you who do about the protein. Is 11.5% enough? |

| From what I understand, the protein content needs to be formulated different. I don't know the formulas or how to do it exactly, but when you see 11.5 percent protein in raw meat, it's really like 40 percent dry matter basis. Raw, since it's all real meat, has more water content or something. It's like canned food. Alot of times canned food reads alot less protein, but it's really higher than the number you see. So confusing. I don't really know how to explain it, LOL, and I hope someone else can explain it for you. PS, I just noticed I always seem to log online right when you have a question! hehe. I swear I'm not stalking your threads

| Wet foods (including raw) have to be converted to dry matter basis. The water needs to be calculated out because they aren't getting vitamins, minerals, protein, carbs, or fat from it and no calories either. There is a sticky in the library about how to do this. Raw medallions are about 40% protein. 11.5% is way too low for all dogs.

| Ahhhh very interesting. I had no idea... I went ahead and picked up a bag of lamb medallions because I knew there had to be a logical explanation - and there was!! Quote: | |
