| Dog scrathing head - need ears cleaned? Unfortunately "ear" is too short a term to search Anyway, Maisie scratches her head a lot. It seems to be her eyes, and sometimes her mouth. She has had flea products, I have changed her food (Origin to TOTW) and it has made no difference. Her ears look very clean and not much hair in them, but I thought I seen something deeper within the ear, maybe wax? Wasnt dark in colour, might've just been a fold in her ear, but obviously I dont want to go poking about. Would the vet look into her ears, or should I try one of those ear cleaning products first?

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I would take her into the vet. She could have a slight infection. I know I had one that would scratch her face and ear but didn't have and infection or mites. She would do it more after I mowed the grass. She started just slightly scratching and got it irritated. They gave her some kind of anti inflammatory drops that worked like a charm.

Had wanted to avoid another trip. I dont think its serious, just more of an annoyance to her. (and me when she starts it in the middle of the night!). It has been going on for ages, and I assumed it was just an allergy, but I have been trying to monitor her more recently and think it it definitely confined to the head area. Think I will watch her a few more days, so i can be more sure of where it annoys her and then go to the vet. Can ears need cleaned without looking dirty??

| My Jade has been doing the same thing for months. I was told before that it was allergies and her ears were fine. The other night she scratched so bad one ear started bleeding. Needless to say she was off to the vet the next day. She would not let them look in her ear so the vet had to muzzle her and the assistant had to basically sit on her. I never knew a 6lb dog could be so strong. Come to find out she did have an ear infection. They want me to put drops in her ears for 12 days. I tried and she will NOT let me put anything in her ear. I have wrapped her in a towel and she wiggles her way out of it. I have tried to put a muzzle on her and she bites it so that doesn't work. I am at a loss. I left a message for the vet to see if there is some type of oral medication she can take. Anybody have any suggestions?? She is wearing me out and its only day 2!! |

| Well, I have an interesting solution to this. I went to the vet and got a solution for sensitive dogs, to clean her ears. There was nothing came out of her ears, and she kept scratching, so I figured I should take her to the vet. She went to the vet on Friday evening, he said they looked slightly red, but nothing that would make him think there was a problem, no sign of infection etc. Gave her a steroid and antibiotic shot for the itching and suggesting keeping the hair on her head short as the heat etc may be irritating. She was booked for the groomers on Saturday anyway, so I said to the groomer about the itching, and she plucked her ears, and trimmed around them but said there was no need to cut the face short. She asked if I had had her anal glands done recently. I havent, and Maisie is just after a bad bout of diarhhoea, and hasnt been herself since. Anyway, the groomer said that sometimes when anal glands are full, it can cause dogs to itch towards the front of their bodies. Maisie wasnt scooting her bum, or itching the back end at all, but her anal glands were very very full when the groomer checked them. Well, today we have a different dog! She is full of life again. She is still scratching a bit, but its more normal now, and not the hard scratching she was doing on her ears. Poor thing must have been so uncomfortable before. The groomer fixed what the vet missed!
