YT 2000 Club Member | Anal glands Took one of my dogs last week to the vets as it looked like she had a punture mark kiddey corner from her butt. Her and my male play often I thought he might of gotten to rough. At that time it was oozing some she was licking it a ton. Vet said its an infected anal gland. First time for us ever in my mutiply dog home. Cleaned it, sent us home with some antibiotics, anti imflamatory. Next day, it ruptured. Gaping hole, freaked me out, she seemed better though more like herself. Back to vets, cleaned it out again, keep using medicines, warm compress. Mid week it looks better, closed, no more licking, dog back to normal. Yesterday, checked it again. Swollen, purplish, looks as if its gonna explode any minute. its sensitive to touch but otherwise she is acting ok. Off to the vets again today. Its infected again as is the other side, vet cleaned her out again. Didnt push to hard as she didnt want to rupture it again, new antibiotic more anti inflamtory and warm compress's. How do I stop this from happening again?? She is 6, never has happened to her or any of my dogs before. advice please

YT 2000 Club Member | Our Max had the same thing and he is 6 years. He hasn't had a issue since the one time. His didn't rupture, but was abcessed. He was on a lot of medicine at the time.

| I would put a cone on your pup until it heals..You have to keep her away from it. after she may need them expressed regularly if she doesn't do it on her own. A groomer can do it or your vet. Some people on here do it themselves. I wouldn't but a lot do.. |

| Sometimes an increase in fiber in the diet can help. Hope she heals up quick. The vet didn't put a drain in? Used to heal best from the inside out (keeping the outside open and flush through the drain, then remove the drain after 3-4 days to a week, then the outside heals.) (This may be old-school, lol)

| Mimi is 6 & she had her 1st anal gland sacculitis (inflammation) not too long ago. It probably doesn't have anything to do w/their age...but 3 cases w/anal gland issues @ 6 years young (omg 666 loll!) One side was pasty (but no infection), so only the other side was getting expressed when I expressed her's @ home. Even now when I express it, only 1 side comes out. I need to take her in & get it expressed as soon as she's showing any kind of discomfort. Mimi licks her bum area, that's how I know. I've read that it can be a food allergy issue & for Mimi, fish based kibble makes her anal glands fill up fast. I don't know how you can avoid this from happening again, but I do know that if you see her scooting or looking back or licking her bum area, you should take her in to the vet asap. Hope she'll feel better soon!

| We've not had an issue with infected glands but when Hot Rod first came to us, his glands were almost impacted. He was so full. He was about 4 months old when we got him. Now, fortunately, one of the local groomers does nails and glands at $2 each so I just take the both of them once a month and have it done. I do it the last week of the month so I don't even have to think too much about it. Sometimes they are fuller than others and I have seen them scoot just before it's time to take them. Hope your little one gets better soon.

Its funny that you say that about your pup and the fish based food because thats what she was on when this happened. I had switched them over to 4health grain free white fish because of one of my pups itching issues and it is the ONLY fish based food that they liked. So maybe it was the food then? She had only been on it about a month. Thanks everyone for the help.
