| Is Bitter Apple Spray safe? Hi - my little Gia is going through quite a chewing phase. She became so fixated on a spot on the carpet where the edge meets the tile. You couldn't break her focus. I told her "NO" and even tried to move her concentration elsewhere, but she continued to return to the spot and chew. I read a magazine about Yorkies and it recommended Bitter Apple spray. I bought some and sprayed the carpet, and it worked! She went to the spot and HATED the taste, and hasn't gone back... But before I spray it on flipflops, wires, etc., I wanted to check here to see if it's safe to use? or Thank you so much! |

| It's safe, and you were lucky,. Some dogs love the taste of it. I would have put a box on the spot! |

| Its safe. I had a Bichon who LOVED it, lol. Needless to say, it did not deter him when he was a puppy So we had to endure the chewing stage for a few months but he grew out of it. I've heard of many who have success with it

I tried to put a box over it - she chewed & scratched at the box. LOL My other problem is that the spot is in the hallway where her potty pad area is, and it was becoming a distraction when I was trying to train her to "go hurry." Now she sniffs around, but leaves the spot alone! Yahoo!!! So glad to hear it's safe. She definately doesn't like it, so there are a few SHOES that will be sprayed next. LOL!!! | |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It worked for Joey, but I think it works better for puppies and in conjunction with saying "no". It doesn't seem to have as much affect for older dogs, but it was great that first year with Joey. Careful with electrical cords, they are better placed totally out of the way.

| My Coco used to so this also and actually shred the edge of the carpet. Such a fresh boy. I guess to him it was a puppy thing because he doesnt do it anymore. Good to know about the bitter apple spray.

| It worked effectively on my dogs when they were puppies. My father has three dogs that he got when they were older as rescues. Two are fox terriers, and one is a long haired dachsund. They were having problems with them jumping on people and very excessive barking, so they hired a trainer. His wife does a lot with animal rescue and is a huge animal lover and advocate, and I know she is very careful with their care. The trainer used Bitter Yuck to stop them from both of these habits, and it worked great. It sounds awful to me, but the trainer sprayed Bitter Yuck in their mouth when they jumped or barked excessively. He said Bitter Yuck works better than Bitter Apple. I am certain that they would not have used it if there was any chance of it being unsafe or inhumane.

| My vet is the one who recommended Bitter Apple. So it must be safe.

| Get a good thick bully stick for him to chew instead. He'll love it and so will your carpet. It's what I did for my two when they were chewing a lot. I still buy bully sticks for them....they love 'em.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | You're absolutely right, but I believe in doing both. One's a deterrent, and the bully stick or other chewing toy gives them a suitable alternative. To the person who says their trainer sprayed products in the mouth to stop certain behavior, I would not do this without a trainer present. I think you have to be very careful how you punish, and when you need to put other things in their mouth, dental sprays or other products, you don't want them to think they are being punished for something.

| Thank you to everyone! The bitter apple spray is working GREAT! She stays away from the cords and the edges of the carpet, which she used to obsess over - now she happily sticks to chewing on her toys! Now we're both happy! |

| Good to hear. My Austin is also being a biter right now. He see's that I take the spray out and he runs.. Not only that, when he starts to get all rough and wants to play bite, I tell him "you want me to get the spray"..and he gets all calm and acts like he is the most innocent pup ever.. Lately I finally got all his charms needed on his collar. One with his name and the address behind with my number and the nyc license one that we are required to have. He decides to bite. So 1 quick spray on those tags, and he stopped. Works like a charm.. =) |
