It worked effectively on my dogs when they were puppies. My father has three dogs that he got when they were older as rescues. Two are fox terriers, and one is a long haired dachsund. They were having problems with them jumping on people and very excessive barking, so they hired a trainer. His wife does a lot with animal rescue and is a huge animal lover and advocate, and I know she is very careful with their care. The trainer used Bitter Yuck to stop them from both of these habits, and it worked great. It sounds awful to me, but the trainer sprayed Bitter Yuck in their mouth when they jumped or barked excessively. He said Bitter Yuck works better than Bitter Apple. I am certain that they would not have used it if there was any chance of it being unsafe or inhumane.
