Hip Dysplasia Well, no one likes to hear the horrible words. Unfortunately, Blue has it. The vet said that he has a severe hip dysplasia & is candidate for a total hip replacement. :::sigh::: Really want the surgery to be the last resort. I know that the surgery is the best for him. He runs and walks fine but he let his rear left leg to rest slightly. Hate to be in the position & I hate to see Blue to go thru the surgery. Will discuss more with the vet soon.

| Oh no! I am sooo sorry to hear this. I wish you all the best. I thought hip dysplasia was more common in larger breeds?

Thanks. Britster, I thought so, too. Guess it can happen in any size of dogs. I had many dogs in past and never thought I'd have a dog with hip dysplasia... ever. The vet said I can keep him on dasaquin if I don't want the surgery. I believe that the surgery would be better for him. I don't want him to suffer when he gets older.

I'm very sorry about Blue. My experience with this disease was with my Husky. At 6 months we had no choice it had to be surgery or put him down as it is very painful to the dog. Total hip replacement then was $4000 a hip but Ohio State Veterinary had an experimental surgery that they were having good results with that we went with. I believe that the costs were $1800 a hip, not done at the same time. One has to heal before they can do the second one. He was about 7 months for the first hip and 18 months for the second. This was 15 years ago so procedures and prices may be different now. Meeko lived until he was 13 when we had to PTS. Good Luck with your little one. Bev

Your Husky was very lucky. Not many are willing to pay a lot of money on their pets. My cousin's Chihuahua mix was thrown over the staircase by her little niece. Poor thing had a broken front leg. She took her dog to the vet & he said it was going to cost her $1k to fix the leg. She said it was very expensive and took her Chih to the animal pound to put her to sleep. Sad thing is that the animal pound let her adopt another Chihuahua. I have yet found out how much the surgery is going to be for Blue but I expect that it's going to be very expensive. I just can't let Blue to live with the bad hips. Money is my last worry. I'll worry about money later. Blue comes first. Will keep you guys posted when I know more later.
