| How much exercise do they need? I've been meaning to ask this question lately but I've been forgetting. How much exercise do Yorkies need? Susan's outdoor running has been curtailed by the presence of predators and a large new neighboring German shepherd. She can run with her sister when I take her to Mom's but that's only once or twice a week. Sometimes when she just HAS to run, she flies around the house or tears up and down the steps to the loft. But how much is enough? She's 6 mos old now. I'm assuming she'll need somewhat less exercise as she matures? |

| Do you take her for walks? I don't have a fenced in yard either, so on-leash walks are the only way to excercise for us. And sometimes we go over to a friend who has a miniature pincher and a fenced in yard. But in my opinion, walks are a great way to get exercise, practice obedience and bond. Mine is 7 months and if I don't take her for two 30 min walks a day minimum, she tears up the house. I'm sure she'll calm down when she gets a little older.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I would defintely say she needs exercise everyday...I would agree that walks work best if you don't want her running around the backyard....I try and take my girls out at least twice a day plus they get about an hour of free backyard time to run around and play...it makes me sleep better at night and they are less rowdy in the house!!

| I agree! I know some Yorkies require less exercise but mine starts to go zonkers in the evening( just as I am winding down) if she hasn't had enough exercise. So I try and walk mine everyday late afternoon to take that edge off and it definitely helps. If I can't walk her, I let her chase the ball back and forth for at least an hour. If not- at 10:00 pm she grabs the ball and starts barking as to say," Ok, I am ready to play

| Different yorkies need different amounts of exercise but in general if they don't have a place to run to spend their energy it's a good idea to walk them on a leash for a good half hour or so. You can usually tell when they get tired. I like to walk Harley in town on the sidewalks because he likes marking all over the place and plus it keeps his nails filed down!

| If I'm not able to take Samson for a walk I just play with him in the house for a few hours. He runs after his toys and plays so much. I think that's what keeps him trim!! |

| I take Gracie and Boodah on 3-4 long walks a day. If not they drive me crazy. They start by whining at me, then barking if I ignore them. A sure sign that they have not been exercised enough is the way Gracie will start shredding things in the house such as toilet paper and paper. We have a very large yard that is not fenced in (lots of hawks), so we walk them on leash all the time. They get a 4 acre walk in the morning and at least two or three 4-6 acre walks throughout the evening. Only then do I have happy yorkies |
