| Low Cal snacks OK guys! I need suggestions here. DH refuses to stop feeding the furbutts part of his dinner and now Adie is getting heavy. Skeeter is just plain fat and we need to keep Gracie lean to keep pressure off her back leg (pins and rod). Sooooooo I have decided to set a bowl of something they can eat next to dh's plate so he can give them that instead of part of HIS fattening food. Good idea? Easier said than done I fear. What should go into said bowl? I am thinking carrots but what else? He will give them each two - three bites so I need really low low cal. They have Blue Buffalo for small breeds available between 7AM and 5PM all day so they shouldn't be hunger. Whatever I put in that bowl had better be delicious or he will not give it to them! |

| Good idea. Carrots are higher in calories than other vegetables. Would they eat green beans, lettuce, celery (could cook if you are worried about the strings getting stuck in their throats), bell pepper? Even a tiny amount of boneless skinless chicken breast would be better than table food. You'd just have to cut down their kibble.

| My girls love steamed string beans, squash, brocolli and raw red bell peppers. My DH does the same thing but he totally denies feeding them and looks me in the face and says " I didn't give them anything". Good luck!

| I like to give them all kinds of veggies. I just found some salmon treats at Petsmart that they just LOVE! it is low in calories and I probably get at least 4 - 6 pieces out of one piece if I'm planning on giving them a bunch. Usually I will break it in half after we get in from a potty break. They were like $4.99 or something like that at petsmart.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Green beans are usually a good one - they have some "oomph" to them, generally dogs like them, and they are filling and usually tolerated very well. If you start carrots, and they've never tried them before - go slow first, bc carrots can cause loose stools in newbies .

| Thanks everyone. I didn't realize carrots were that much higher in calories either! They do love veggies though so maybe I can just make sure they have their own bowl and beg him to limit them to that! Yep, definitely veggies. I will name them beggies so he will at least think about it! LOL. |

| There shouldn't be a huge difference, but things like carrots and butternut squash do have a few more calories than others like green beans. So when talking about weight loss, there may be better options. Thnk watery vegetables... things like lettuce and celery are probably lowest.

| I recently saw on Dr. Oz that cucumbers are about 15 calories each. I wonder if yorkies can eat that, without the seeds of course. (I don't know anyone who has tried it.)

| AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGG! Do any of you have this kind of trouble with your significant other? I set out a plate for the 4 furbutts right next to dh's. It had 8 tiny pieces of lean pork chop and 4 small pieces of green bean. Dh laughed (like aw isn't that cute) when I told him it was for the pooches and please don't give them anything else. By the time I got back to the table with my own plate he had given every piece to them and they were crowded around him begging for more! Of COURSE he gave them more! At least he didn't give them any mashed potatoes. Grrrrrrr I'm gonna have to work on this plan some more. |

Good idea Ann! but DH does most of the cooking! I just finish it and get it to the table! Last night I tried setting MY plate down first and didn't put his down until I was ready to sit down. THEN he started sneaking them bites! I think he is getting the message though I started telling him how unhealthy Skeeter is getting and how much Gracie's leg would hurt if she was heavy! He has always said that Skeeter is fat because he doesn't exercise as much as Adie but now that Adie is gaining he can't say that anymore! Anyway the plate that is just for the furbutts seems to be a success with him. I just need to keep working on him. Just to prove my point I have attached a recent photo of the pork roast. Sigh. I am embarrasses! | |
