| Maxwell is 2.5 years old, almost 3 years old. The instructors at his agility class feel that "real food" will get them to do the jumps, weaves and etc. I have noticed he does follow better when having that what they give him, tho I have treats for him too. At times, they give me some of what they are treating with. One lady has some sort of meatball that come frozen from Walmart. He doesn't get milkbones but other types of treats which the Vet told me to cut out. They want me to uses "Cherrios" since it is less fat and calories than the dog treats. Maxwell is on "Blue Buffalo", but has been on numerous of other dry foods in the past, which I won't go into. He's a picky dog, but I just have to be a tough Mom on him and stick to one food, which I have for quite a while. He looks overweight in his middle section, and feel it. I have noticed that his harness was getting tight, but didn't think he gained until lately when I weighed him. |

Jackson spit out green beans. He refuses. He would never do/learn tricks for kibble either. He's the pickiest dog ever. I'm lucky in the fact that he HATES potato chips. We could drop 100 on the floor and he wouldn't touch one. He also won't eat anything potato, like a french fry or baked potato, anything. He's so weird! He is sooo motivated by cheese so I usually take a slice of cheese and break it up into really small bits to teach him new tricks. veggienut is correct in that a lot of professional trainers tell you to use real food, it's a huge motivator when it comes to training. Like, Jackson will do his tricks for a cheerio, but they're so much more lame. His play dead and spin are like in slow motion like 'ugh, I don't really wanna do this but I guess I will'... Yet break out some cheese, a bit of hot dog or chicken and he's in fast forward and can't wait to do the next trick! As far as dog treats go, he really really loves anything soft, small, meaty and chewy, like Zuke's Mini Natural's. He will do anything for those. Or the Wellness jerky squares.

| Cheese or meat is usually a great incentive, and they will continue to work even if they are full. So tiny pieces are best. Joey loved mozzarella sticks, I think I could teach him how to make "moving avatars", if I had enough mozzarella! The Vet told me not to use any such foods that us humans eat. This is what is going to put weight on them and later cause issues. Maxwell use to be like 7.5 or less in weight, and now he is almost 8.5 due to feeding him such foods. |

| I have been eyeing Bonnie's little round belly too. I am afraid I have been giving her too many "trick" treats. I don't really give her any people food. She eats NV raw. But I was also putting out 10-12 pieces of kibble for her to nibble on. I stopped that a couple of weeks ago. Her treats are being broken into smaller pieces, She is due a vet check up. I know her vet is going to say something about her "round-ness" |

Maybe you could give much smaller treats when in class too. Instead of a 1/4 of a slice of hot dog cut it in half again. Shouldn't they treat be very tiny?

| Yep - that's why I LOVE Zuke's! I even break the Zuke's up sometimes.

| People food is just fine for training. It'd be nice if they all liked veggies though. Hotdogs are probably way down on the list of good options. Cheese seems to work so well for so many people. With the exception of cottage and maybe parmesan, I don't think it's a good treat. Bits of boneless, skinless chicken breast would definitely keep interest and it's low calorie.

| I weighed him at Feeder's Supply tonight ( a local pet store chain) and he was only 8 lbs. I know you need to weigh on the same scale for accuracy, but he is a bit lighter. Even his harness isn't so tight. |

| Both of our dogs needed to lose some weight. Dad gives them too many treats! What has worked well for me is to cut down on their kibble and add peas and carrots to their food. I buy the frozen pea and carrot mix, microwave enough for two or three days and add that to their food. It fills them up and cuts out the extra calories. I've tried to retrain Dad...but you know how that goes. As far as training treats go...I like the Authority brand Liver Treats available at Petsmart. Our dogs love them even if they already ate. One thing I really like about them is they are a soft treat and you can pinch off whatever size you want. My dogs will do anything for even a little crumb of these.
