Fishy Smell

Hi Andy has a fishy smell coming from his bum , I am assuming this is from the anal gland ,that it needs to be emptied ? Just wanted opinions on this besides attaching air freshner to his tail lmao

Lol, an air freshener, I didn't try that. Yes you're probably right, it sounds like the anal glands, and many say it has a fishy smell. The area around the anus will look puffy too. Joey would scoot on the floor, and we took him to the vet to have it done. The vet showed me how to do it, but if you do it wrong you can push the contents further up the anal canal, and cause an impaction, you want to press the glands gently around and behind. It might be best to have the vet show you for the first time. Joey's vet said some puppies don't empty the glands when they poop, they aren't pushing hard enough for some reason. Some people have success with a little fiber added to the diet, frozen green beans work for us. Some groomers automatically do this as part of the grooming, but many dogs don't need it, and I would never do it if they don't need it. I've noticed that Chloe sometimes has this fishy odor...I associate it with canned tuna fish... However, it's not constant, so I never thought of it being her glands. I thought maybe she just had some really odd smelling gas as it usually happens shortly before a scheduled potty trip. Is it possible that this smell could be something other than glands?

Thanks for your advise and help . Funny enough he had a big poopy this morn and the smell was baaaaad .Feeling in there after there is no puffiness .I believe he managed to expell it .But he goes in to the Vet's in a week anyway and will mention it .
