| Pre-Surgery Bloodwork - Help? Hello there!!! I am new to YT and I have learned so much from you already! I have a 4 pound male that is being neutered today (or was supposed to be). In the pre-surgery bloodwork, the BUN came out a little elevated (liver was fine). I dont have the paperwork in front of me (will get that this afternoon and repost). In your experiences, how high is 'high'? To be very honest, I am little skeptical that they are seeing their opportunity to run a ton of diagnostics on him just because he's barely over their normal (lets not forget that vets are in business too). I am trying to balance my obvious realistic concern vs. not getting taken for 1K just in tests??? He is 6 months and full of vigor - no obvious signs anything is wrong. Any advice ya'll can impart on me would ease my mind! |

| Blood work I would get a second opinion. At least call a Yorkie breeder in your area, explain the situation and ask for their input or for a recommended veterinary that they use. Hope this helps.....K. |

| Any elevation could indicate a problem, but BUN does often go up a bit before surgery because of dehydration (I'm guessing he was fasted from water).

| How high is high? For example, over the phone she told me his BUN was something like 6.9 and the range was 3.5 to 5.8. That seems like a miniscule amount of "high" to me. From what I have read, "high" for a puppy is in the 50's. I feel already like I am getting soaked for more diagnostics. Plus, they are keeping him there now just for urinanalysis to rule out why the BUN is so "high" ? Again, is this level a little over-reacting? |
