| Stella Rae had a reactions to vaccines today So Stella Rae and her brother went in for their final vaccines today(i had his new owner bring him to make sure i had them all done before saying goodbye) The appointment went well. Their hearts were healthy and gaining weight and plenty of it. Teddy weighed 5 lbs 15 ozs i know big shocker. Stella weighed in at 2 lbs 15 ozs. They did the shots and rabies and sent us on our way Well when i got home she was chewing on a brand new bully stick but went limp. She couldn't stand and started falling over. I called vet and he said give her nutrical....i did. 3 times before she finally came around. Do you think she had a reaction to shots? I was scared out of my mind. Never had that happen before. She just looked so pitiful

| how old is she? Was she one of Laynee's puppies born in December right? If so she wouldn't be old enough for a rabies shot.

| How is she now? Are her gums pink? I have no idea why he said give nutrical (unless there was a suspicion of hypoglycemia). In the case of a reaction like this, they should have had you bring her back immediately and gave Benadryl and steroids. Maybe they thinking was just that it sent her into a hypo attack or something. Hmm. How old is she? Did she get the lepto vaccine?

| How old are the puppies? Texas doesn't require the first rabies shot until four months old. No matter what the age, rabies should never be given along with the other vaccinations because of the risk of a serious reaction. If non-core vaccinations are given like lepto and corona, the risk of a serious reaction also goes way up. I agree with Crystal. That vet should have had you come back to the office immediately for steroids and/or benadryl. The vet should have had you remain in the office for at least a half hour after the shots were given in the first place. |

| Yes they were Laynee's pups. Born December 2. She's 12 weeks 2 days old. Here at my vet in texas they give rabies at 12 weeks old. She got her last round of puppy shots (bordatella/parvo) He thought she was limpy because of low blood sugar. Idk. Vet is closed now but I'm wondering if she needs anti-inflammitory (sp?) stuff

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Wow, I think that is way too young for the rabies, my vet suggest to give them 1/4 teaspoon of benadryl to prevent a bad reaction to the vaccines my dogs have done great since they get the benadryl after their vaccines. My pups start their vaccines at 9 weeks old and don't finish the core until 16 weeks old and then rabies at 6 or 7 months. Rabies is a VERY strong vaccine to give to such a young puppy. hope she gets better soon. hugs, Carmen in nj |

| I'd be getting Benadryl into her immediately. Some vets do give rabies at three months, but it is not okay for such a small puppy. It is also not okay to finish DHP so early. She may not have even been receptive since she is so young. The very youngest this vaccine should be stopped is 16 weeks and new research says 18 weeks.

That's what i thought but all the pups started their vaccines at 6 weeks old...then a little after 9 and 12 wks..He said they are done for the year. Trust me i LOVE my vet but sometimes i wonder. She's acting a little better now, Her brother Gizzy just came over for a playdate and she went from mopey to zoomies in seconds. Idk what to think. All i know is that the first few hours after her shots scared me

In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs These poor puppies are going to need a fourth round of vaccinations. | |

If it were me, I would be looking for another vet. Exposing puppies so young to adverse reactions to dangerous vaccines when they aren't that effective anyway, giving rabies at only 12 weeks old, combining rabies with other vaccinations, all go against current protocol recommended by vet schools and other experts. You are lucky your little Stella didn't die today. Dr. Dodd's protocol has been adopted by the majority of vet schools. I wonder if this vet is even aware of it? http://www.doglogic.com/vaccination.htm
