Need advice on possible blocked tear duck

Have you have a schirmer test done? This is where a strip of filter paper is placed over the conjunctival sac of the eye and measures the tear production. This is the usual method for determining dry eye.

There are medications you can use to help treat dry eye. These are used for life. Medications were given to Maddie, however, none worked on her. Her tear duct does not work, therefore, tear stimulators will not work. Her only option is a surgery: parotid duct transposition. The parotid duct carries saliva from the salivary gland in the cheek to the front of the mouth. This long delicate tube can be surgically re-routed to the eye.

When do you go to the vet? The sooner the better.

That is fantastic that you were able to schedule an appointment over the weekend and get him in so quickly!

Are you taking him to Animal Eye Associates in St. Louis or the vet school in Columbia?

too far from me but there are alot of great doctors in san diego orang county area - keep us posted on diagnosis and have a girl on my allergy group in san diego who rescues so she knows the best doctors in san diego area

Just an FYI, but it will be much, much cheaper to get him treated in Missouri than it will be in Southern California.

definitely as so cal is very expensive for vet treatment and we do not have vet schools near by either so hopefully this person that wants him can afford long term treatment

Well we are leaving tommarow morning a one hour trip their but these docs are only at this office 2 days a week so I must leave early in the morning, The women whom answered the phone and set the appointment told me these were the best docs in Mo, they are from the university and she said their number 1 in this field, so the best care is coming his way. Talk more after I return If I have time before I go to work.

Sounds wonderful! Vet schools have the top board certified ophthalmologists in the country. They will figure out what the little guy's problem is.

I'll be praying for him. What's his name BTW?

Well just got back and the vet was so informative, She took a tear test one eye was 14 a bit low should be around 15 but not bad, next eye 0 tears. So could be caused by birth defect because of the one eye being smaller than the other, not by much but you can see it. Or that the tear duct is underdeveloped or inflammed. He is so tiny, they all just loved him, for now she gave him Optimmune in a low dose to see how it does since he is so small. And an eye lubricant to keep eye moist. So in 4 weeks must have eye checked to see if any tears are producing if so he will just have to have this medicine in his the rest of his life. She did not think surgury is a good idea as for now, She said sometimes it produces to much tears and it just flows all over their face, she did not seem like they had not quite perfected this tecnoligy quite so well yet. So will take her advice and I believe he will be my dog as time goes on. He is my $1000 BABY!!!! And sweet as hell I might ad. They all wanted to keep him at the vets and the clients too.

so glad you did this and he has a firm diagnosis - the opthos are amazing - so glad he has some meds to make him feel better
