| I know that the doc put dye in his eye and turned off the light to look at the eye but I think he was focused on checking on a scratched eye. He did not say so much. Only that the one eye seemed smaller than the other eye and their was no ulcers, you can see that one eye is smaller but I figured it was from squinting his eye so much, when he was young. |

| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | This is one of the reasons that I try to discourage people from breeding, it often is very expensive, as you mentioned you had to pay for a c-section and x-rays, but the eyes are nothing to mess with. I hope people never breed because they want to earn a little extra money; they often end up costing you a fortune. He may need treatment for the rest of his life.

Whatever your reasons for having this litter, you produced a puppy with a medical condition so you are responsible for him.

Sounds like micophthalmia which is hereditary. I have a yorkie with it. She has excess drainage from her eye because of the size.....it sits back a bit in the socket and does not drain properly. She came to be from a bust a couple of years ago and was about 5 years of age at that time. She cannot see out of that eye. Here is a link about this: Microphthalmia (Small Eyes) in Puppies It is common in Cavaliers and breeders are discouraged from breeding the parents of dogs afflicted with this condition. Microphthalmia and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel I DO hope you intend to find out exactly WHAT is wrong with this puppy and take the appropriate steps to help him; and if it turns out this is a genetic condition, you will alter his parents.

The vet I use, now, quickly sent us to an ophthamologist.Have you have a schirmer test done? This is where a strip of filter paper is placed over the conjunctival sac of the eye and measures the tear production. This is the usual method for determining dry eye. There are medications you can use to help treat dry eye. These are used for life. Medications were given to Maddie, however, none worked on her. Her tear duct does not work, therefore, tear stimulators will not work. Her only option is a surgery: parotid duct transposition. The parotid duct carries saliva from the salivary gland in the cheek to the front of the mouth. This long delicate tube can be surgically re-routed to the eye. When do you go to the vet? The sooner the better.

| According to the health survey conducted by the YTCA, dry eye (KCS) is the second most common eye problem in Yorkies. Health Survey 2007 Genetics are very complicated and breeding is a huge responsibility. It's now very important that you find out from an ophthalmologist exactly what the puppy has. Depending on the diagnosis, his parents may have to be altered and retired from breeding. You should also contact the person who bought his brother and make them aware if this turns out to be a genetic condition. In this case, you should expect to pay for his brother's eye exam also. |
