| Grain Free Food & Weight Gain My Madison is 4 years old and I have been feeding her Acana grain free for about 6 months. She absolutely loves this food but since she has been eating it she has gained 3 lbs. Does anyone think this could be from the food? Someone else said to have her thyroid checked. Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't want to take her off the food unless I have to but if it is the cause of her weight gain I will. Thanks so much for your help!! |

| I forgot to say that she gets a 1/2 cup a day of the Acana and the doctor said she should weigh about 6-7 lbs. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | 3 pounds is alot to gain in 6 months time from the same amount of food, even if it is grain free. How much do the directions on the packaging suggest to give? I don't routinely feed kibble, but 1/2 cup sounds like a bit much. My Wysong kibble is 1/2 cup, for a 10lb dog per day, so I'm feeding about half of that for my 4 1/2 lbs boy.

| Check to see what the protein and fat percentage is on the package..it may be too high.

| Going with what others posted above -- check the recommended feeding amounts on the kibble bag. Take into consideration your dog's ideal weight and activity level, and whether kibble is the primary food your dog eats. Acana grain free is slightly higher in calories and fat, but half a cup doesn't sound like too much, depending on what else Madison eats during the day. |

| According to the bag, she is eating what is advised for a 6lb dog. That is what I have always fed her because that is what the vet says is her ideal weight. I have also tried supplementing with green beans and even though she really likes them it has not helped her weight. She is not active at all. She would rather just watch my other dogs play or sleep but I wonder if that could be her thyroid also. I called the vet and made an appointment to have blood work done on Thursday. My other two dogs are on grain free food also and their weight is perfect. If her thyroid is good I don't know what to try. |
