Your thoughts on Orijen?

I'm looking at switching Reesie's food. He has been on Wellness puppy since we brought him home, he is now 6 1/2 months old. He liked it at first, but not any more. He just sniffs it and walks away. You know he doesn't like his food anymore when he would rather eat his poop! LOL! Anyway, I was wondering what were your thoughts on Orijen? I've heard it's a good food, but I thought I read something about a food recall from Orijen. Also, where do you buy it from? I've tried to find it in pet stores around here (Dayton, Ohio), but I haven't found it. Do I order it online? If so where's the best place? Thanks!

Orijen is a good food made by a good company.

It is a bit to high in protein for me (well my pups). So I feed them the Acana Provincial line which is made by the same company but lower in protein.
The boys just finished a bag of Acana Provincial Prairie and are on Acana Provincial Grasslands right now. They LOVE IT!

it's a very good kibble. the only bad thing i can think of is the kibble size is a little big.

Some people here think high protein is bad for small dogs.
Some people here think it is just fine for small dogs.
I do not believe either is wrong or right.
Because I could not decide who made more sense regarding protein levels...I go with a middle of the road protein level.
Acana is around 33%
Orijen is about 42%
Some foods like Natural Balance "Ultra Premium" are about 23%

PS Eating poop at 6 months seems to be common-LOL
Mickey is just 6 months old and he eats his if I do not get to it fast enough! YUCK!

High protein is not "bad." It's kind of a debatable issue. Some feel Yorkies little bodies don't need the amount of protein in Orijen (which I believe is over 42%) If you have a liver compromised dog, they need a LOW protein diet and with yorkies being so prone to liver shunts, many are leery to feed a high protein food. My personal opinion is that the more active your dog is, the higher protein you can/should feed. Jackson's a fairly active dog.. he's no Border Collie or anything, but he generally gets 1-3 hourly or more visits to the dog park, 1 walk per day at min. of 30 minutes, a nightly game of fetch, weekly visits to my dad's house with their 2 dogs and fenced in backyard, etc so he gets fed a grain free 32% protein food (Fromm) and it works for us! I think you just need to find what works for you and your dog.

I use Orijen as part of Sasha's rotation diet and she LOVES this food. I really like this food as well as the company that makes it. They also make Acana which is what Sasha will be eating next. I'm really excited to get her started on it. She had great results with Orijen so I'm hoping for the same with the Acana.

Why do you do a rotation diet? I thought it was not good to change their food a lot? Although, I can see how dogs get tired of eating the same food all the time.

My feeling is that we get certain nutrients from many different foods.
I like to change there food about every bag or 2 for this reason and so they do not get bored.

We use Acana and Snickers LOVES it!! Acana is by the same company as Orijen, just has a lower level of protein. We used to have Snickers on Evo which is 42% protein and he liked it and did well on it. He got sick of it and then we switched to Acana which he adores. Acana grainfree (the provincials line) comes in 3 varieties and we rotate between 2 of them-Prairie and Grasslands. I also have Snick on Raw in the morning so depending on the raw protein I am feeding I adjust his Acana. If I feed poultry raw, I feed Prairie and if I am feeding red meat raw-I feed Grasslands.

I love Champion Petfoods which are the makers of Orijen and Acana. Orijen was awarded Pet Food of the Year in 2009! Many use Orijen successfully on YT.
