This is one mans theory. I have my own theories. And they appear to be valid because in my house it is not an issue. The only time it bec omes an issue is when one of the girls is in heat, and a simple hey hey hey, is all it takes.

I'm not saying it is not natural for dogs to do this. I'm just saying you do not have to tolerate it if you don't like it. It can be controlled.

Sio99 02-13-2010 05:00 PM

precisely why I have only had females! This is one issue I would prefer not dealing with! As it is right now I have a retired momma that I adopted who is pushing 10. Im pretty certain she is in season now because even though she doesn't bleed anymore she has been flirting up a storm flagging her tail in my poor Lexi's face who keeps looking her as if to say and what do you want me to do about that? The poor old girl is obviously looking for love in all the wrong places!

This is exactly my point. Males get a bad rep because people do not realize that the behavior can be stopped.

I don't find it entertaining, or even mildly funny, no more amusing then any other unwanted behavior.

I don't want it going on in front of my grandkids or my house guests. So I correct it when it first starts, and that's it. it's much easier to control then any other unwanted behavior.

and when my young grandsons walk asround holding on to their dinkies, I correct them also, because I don't want them still doing it when they start school.

The dominance theory was based on wolves from a study that was flawed..even if you don't want to study about that information which comes from people with PHD's dogs were domesticated over 316,000 years ago...just how long do you think these traits are going to last in a dog...what about humans from 316,000 years...don't you think we have all evolved...please do your dogs a favor and pick up some books on positive training and also read about the flawed thinking based on a group of wolves.

This was man 316,000 years ago..so I would guess there have been some changes made and new ways of thinking.

What i find interesting is that you are so adament that dogs have evolved away from their primal instincts of dominance, but yet insist that the primal instinct to hump things is still there.

I believe that they still have all of their primal instincts but that they can be controlled by the pack leader.

in all honesty Jeannie - I would find it NOT amusing either if that kind of thing was going on with my leg - it's not like anyone is thinking it's ok or encouraging it - we just found it funny - I mean really ... we ARE talking about dogs humping after all.

It's not like it's an illness and something sober -it's a funny subject. ....maybe I'm immature with the pictures and posts but this whole thread was wayyyyy too hard to resist...:)

there was good information here - no one discounted that

the world is already so messed up and if no one laughed - where would we be ?

I understand, it could be amusing I guess. But honestly there were people that were afraid to post questions or comments for fear of being made fun of.

Maybe it's because we are breeders that we see it as more clinical, for lack of a better word. I could not participate in the mating if I looked at it as humorous or even sexual.

It's like your OBGYN. Do you want them thinking of sex or snickering when they are doing your pap test?

If I saw it as humorous, I would have to laugh, if I saw it as sexual it would be like ewwww!!. so my mind is trained to look at it as a job, something that has to be done. Like cleaning up poopie butts it's part of the job.

The fact that you do not believe in the dominance theory does not mean it is not factual. You might get a kick out of watching your dogs hump your leg, but some of us do not.

For those who do not want this behavior to continue there is a solution.

Is there really any harm in the advice I posted? Will it hurt the dog if she gives it a try? If indeed the dominance theory is outdated then I guess it won't work for her and she can give the dog a teddy bear and post videos on youtube.

There are also people with PHD's that do believe in the dominance theory. There is a man that actually lived with a pack of wolves and experienced their heirarchy first hand.

I don't follow along behind you and attempt to discredit everything you say, why do you feel the need to discredit everything I say.

You all had your fun. I went back and found a thread where the OP had posted on a thread with this same topic previously, leading me to believe that she started this thread just to stir things up.

While you all were on here having your fun, I was off answering serious PM's from people who were wanting a straight answer but were afraid to ask for fear if being ridiculed.

Are you referring to me? I've probably posted on a humping thread before, though as I've said, Thor's not a humper. I think I once posted that Thor was licking himself Down There, but that was like a year ago. I guess I'm just an incredibly patient pot stirrer. Just wait, I'm going to start another thread like this one in 2015! BWAhahahaha!

I'm going to be honest - I hate it when people pull out the PM card. Fine, someone private messaged you something. In that case, keep it private.

JeanieK, I'm sure some people don't want male dogs because of humping. Has it occurred to you that many other people want female yorkies because yorkies are more "girly", they want a dog they can dress up, potentially breed, etc? The whole contention that you have to sell your male dogs for less money because of a nefarious group of pro-humpers deceiving the population at large, it does seem like a hang up.

Personally, I would not allow Thor to hump or enjoy himself in his special way in front of company. OTOH, it's not like I have him poop or pee in front of other people either, and it's not that I think bathroom habits are "bad", just that they are experiences other people probably don't want to share with my dog.

As I stated before, I don't really care about humping, but it does kind of gross me out that he's licking his crotch and then licking me. So if I can figure out a reasonable way to stop it, for instance, by cutting off his pee string, I will. I'm just glad other people can share some humor about the sittchyashun!

If anyone is interested, please check out my other recent, super-controversial threads on Cute Stuff Your Yorkie Does and Dental Hygiene. If they don't get you riled up, nothing will.

Sio99 02-13-2010 08:04 PM

Not to be graphic - but what makes you think they are pleasuring themselves? Couldn't it certainly be grooming themselves? After my retired momma pees she usually goes to town (and there is no kissing until she has spent some time in the water bowl btw). I have never assumed she was looking to get down and dirty...just the opposite. She was known to have pretty large litters so her personal area is more pronounced then most...she looks likes shes always in heat. Birthing has not been kind to her. I think because of this she is more concerned with hygiene then most females seem to be. Male dogs are not men. I think its a stretch to think its always sexual. Maybe its comforting but unless you see a happy ending I think saying pleasuring themselves is a stretch.

Also - the real reason I didn't want males was lifting the legs. Dogs are dogs...both males and females lick themselves - and I have had a few females that were champion humpers too. I have trained my females that they can clean themselves when we are alone but not around company. It was pretty easy too.

I have a female who humps stuffed animals and another one who humps her brother; so, it is not reserved just for the males.

And...I honestly feel my males are sweeter than my girls. I love them all..I just feel the males are usually more cuddly.

Oh...nevermind. I see you said that females do it, too.
